Whitefish High School teacher Amanda Matdies is receiving a national award for her contributions to the field of family and consumer science.

The American Association of Family and Sciences is honoring Matdies with the 2019 New Achiever Award.

Based in the Washington, D.C., area, AAFCS is the only professional association that provides leadership and support to FCS students and professionals from both multiple practice settings and content areas. More than 6,000 AAFCS members assist individuals, families, and communities in making informed decisions about their well-being, relationships, and resources to achieve optimal quality of life.

Matdies received the national award after being selected at the state level.

Matdies has taught family and consumer sciences at WHS for four years and in 2017 was awarded the Educator of Excellence award from Montana ProStart, a national career technical education high school program developed by the National Restaurant Education Foundation.

She teaches cooking and baking at the school and is heading up a new hospitality and tourism course, as well.
