SANDPOINT — Bonner County commissioners unanimously adopted a resolution Tuesday calling on Idaho lawmakers not to bring any legislation curtailing Idahoans’ Second Amendment rights.

It also calls on Gov. Brad Little to veto any legislation that would infringe on residents’ right to keep and bear arms, said Commission Steven Bradshaw.

Commissioner Dan McDonald said the resolution builds on a civil liberties resolution advanced by former Commissioner Cornel Rasor.

“It just is a little more specific to one of things that we see coming along here lately with these potential red flag laws,” said McDonald.

Red flag laws, which have come to increasing prominence with school shootings, enable law enforcement or others to seize firearms from someone who may pose a threat to themselves or others. Such laws have been passed in 12 states, according to the Idaho Statesman.

An effort in the Legislature to take away gun rights of people convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence did not clear the House last year, the Idaho Press reported. An effort to establish a law for confiscating firearms did not make it through the Senate earlier this year.

McDonald counties around the country have been voicing opposition to red flag laws.

“I had a number of people reach out to me and say, ‘Hey, why isn’t Bonner County doing that?’” said McDonald.

Commissioner Jeff Connolly said Idaho’s laws and Constitution already do a good job at protecting gun rights.

“We’re lucky we live in the state of Idaho,” said Connolly.

The motion to adopt the resolution came with little discussion.

“Thank you,” said county resident Doug Paterson.
