Wood: Two seats not too many

COEUR d’ALENE — City Council hopeful Christie Wood plans to remain on the North Idaho College Board of Trustees if she’s elected in November to the Coeur d’Alene council.
“I love my position on the NIC board,” Wood told The Press Wednesday. “I know it sounds cliche’ but I get to be part of something very special. They really do change lives at the college.”
Wood, who announced her City Council candidacy this week, has 3 ½ years left of her term on the NIC board.
“I intend to finish it out,” she said.
Wood said she doesn’t think the double-duty will be an issue. She said she plans to recuse herself from voting if an issue ever arises that presents a conflict of interest between the two entities, although she doesn’t anticipate that will be a frequent problem.
“We don’t do a lot together,” she said.
If elected to the City Council, it won’t be the first time Wood has been on two local governing boards at the same time.
She previously served on the Coeur d’Alene School District Board of Trustees, from 2000 to 2008, and for two of those years, she was also on the NIC board.
While Wood was serving on the two education boards, she was also working full-time.
More than a decade later, things have changed.
After nearly 30 years in law enforcement as a police officer and sergeant in Coeur d’Alene, Wood retired in December 2015.
“I have a lot more time to devote,” Wood said. “I’m retired, and I have a lot of energy.”
