Five area players named to first team

BOISE — Genesis Prep seniors Jonny Hillman and Bella Murekatete were named to the All-Idaho high school basketball boys and girls first teams, respectively, for the third straight year.

Other area players named to the first team included Post Falls junior Colby Gennett (5A boys), Timberlake sophomore Brooke Jessen (3A girls) and Wallace senior Zack Welch (1A Division I boys).

Hillman, a guard who missed the state tournament after suffering a torn meniscus in the championship game of the District 1 tournament, averaged 21.2 points. 3.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.2 steals per game for the Jaguars, who placed third at state. He has signed to play at NAIA Carroll College in Helena, Mont.

Murekatete, a center who has signed with Washington State, averaged 22.1 points, 9.8 rebounds and 6.2 blocked shots per game for the Jaguars, who won the consolation title at state.

Gennett, a guard, averaged 13.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 3.1 steals for the Trojans, who placed third at state.

Jessen, a forward, averaged 16.4 points, 11.4 rebounds, 3.2 steals and 1.9 assists for the Tigers, who took third at state.

Welch, a guard, averaged 24.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.5 steals for the Miners. Welch, who scored 52 points in a game in January, has committed to Community Colleges of Spokane.

Other area players named to the second team were Lake City senior forward Bridget Rieken; Timberlake sophomore guard Taryn Soumas, St. Maries senior guard Jackson Pritchard, St. Maries senior center Dan Howard, Genesis Prep senior center Kon Ajang, Genesis Prep senior point guard Rachel Schroeder, Bonners Ferry senior guard Seth Bateman, and Bonners Ferry sophomore point guard Holly Ansley.

State players of the year were: 5A, Ellis Magnuson, Borah; and Darian White, Mountain View; 4A, Amoro Lado, Vallivue; and Chinma Njoku, Century; 3A, Dawson Cummins, Kimberly; and Madison Jackson, Parma; 2A, Garrett Hawkes, North Fremont; and Reagan Yamauchi, Soda Springs; 1A Division I, Spencer Schumacher, Prairie; and Bailee Owens, Shoshone; and 1A Division II, Covy Kelly, Garden Valley; and Chevelle Shepherd, Salmon River.

The All-Idaho teams are compiled by the Idaho Statesman newspaper of Boise, following voting from coaches statewide.
