BONNERS FERRY — The wind and rain did not stop the vendors and shoppers from turning out for opening day of the Bonners Ferry Farmers Market on Saturday, April 27, but it did put a damper on the day.

For artist Lisa Rode, this was not only her first time at this farmers market, but the first time at any farmers market. She brought an array of her artwork, most done in charcoal or colored pencil, with an emphasis on horses, wolves, and other animals.

Despite having sides on her tent, the weather still caused problems for her and she eventually needed to reinforce it with sandbags to hold it in place and protect her artwork. This did not stop the artist, who recently moved to Bonners Ferry, from remaining enthusiastic about the day.

“This was awesome weather to break me in. I am learning a lot about sandbags and wind, but otherwise I am having a really good time and meeting a lot of great people,” said Rode. “Not a big crowd today with the weather, but hopefully it will get better as the weeks go by.”

Local photographer Annie Pflueger had her tent blown back about four feet by a gust of wind.

“It’s always exciting gearing up for another Farmers Market season, but the weather can play a huge role in making or ‘breaking’ your day,” said Pflueger. “Wind is the worst to contend with. Today’s opening day, we had way too much of both wind and rain.”

Some of the vendors suffered damage to the items they sell, which did not make it an easy start to the season.

“On the bright side, I applaud the folks who came out to support our vendors and weather the storm along side of us,” said Pflueger. “Here’s to sunshiny days ahead!”

The shoppers may have been low in numbers, but loyal customers, cooped up for too long throughout the winter, showed up to support the market, peering at the good from under hoods and umbrellas.

“Rain or shine … every weekend,” said Lori Werder, who came with her husband, Rob Werder. “It’s the first opening and we wouldn’t miss it.”

Vendors and customers alike look forward the continuing season with better weather in the forecast.
