Timberlake edges Lakeland in softball

SPIRIT LAKE — Maddy Salois scored on a passed ball with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Timberlake Tigers edged the visiting Lakeland Hawks 9-8 in a nonleague softball game Thursday.
Salois also delivered a two-run triple as part of a four-run fifth inning that put Timberlake (15-1) up 7-3.
Lakeland (7-15) answered with five runs in the top of the sixth, capped by Harley See’s RBI single.
Lily Carhart and Bernie Carhart each went 3 for 4 for Timberlake, and Becca Malloy had two hits and drove in two runs.
“We hit the ball well; we did not hit her (Lakeland pitcher Taylor Woolley) as well the first time we played them,” Timberlake coach Casi Lupinacci said.
Kyleigh Dyer had two hits and drove in two runs for Lakeland, and Kathryn Wardak hit a two-run homer in the second inning.
Malloy struck out seven for Timberlake, and Woolley fanned eight for Lakeland.
“They are definitely a good team to play going into state,” Lupinacci said, “because we’re going to see pitching similar to that.”
Lakeland returns to action Tuesday as the 4A Region 1 tournament begins in Rathdrum. No. 2 seed Sandpoint faces No. 3 Moscow at 3 p.m., with the winner playing top seed Lakeland at 5.
Timberlake plays host to Bonners Ferry on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the first round of the 3A District 1 tournament in Spirit Lake. No. 2 seed Priest River takes on No. 3 Kellogg at 4.

SANDPOINT — Bubba Gleaves went 4 for 4 with four RBIs and four runs scored, including a two-run double in the sixth, as the Trojans (10-10) beat the Bulldogs (3-13) in nonleague play at Sandpoint Middle School.
Kaycie Barber went 3 for 5 with four RBIs and four runs scored for Post Falls. Kelsey Horn was 3 for 5 and scored three times for the Trojans, and Sophie Nungesser struck out six in five innings of work.
Post Falls returns to action next Tuesday at the 5A Region 1 tournament. The fourth-seeded Trojans will play at No. 1 Lake City at 2 p.m., while No. 2 Coeur d’Alene faces No. 3 Lewiston at Ramsey Park. The winners play at 4 at Lake City in the title game; the losers play at 4 at Ramsey in a loser-out game.

LEWISTON — Samantha Mader struck out 10 as the host Bengals beat the Vikings in a 5A Inland Empire League makeup game at Airport Park.
The two teams will play again Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Ramsey Park in the first round of the 5A Region 1 tournament. Coeur d’Alene (8-7, 5-7 5A IEL) is the No. 2 seed to regionals; Lewiston (4-8 league) earned the No. 3 seed with the win.

ST. MARIES — Allie Brebner went 3 for 4, and her two-run single capped a five-run seventh inning and lifted the host Lumberjacks past the Wildcats for a split of their nonleague doubleheader.
In the first game, Izabella Seatz went 3 for 5, drove in six runs and scored three in Kellogg’s win.
Alena Davenport went 4 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored in the second game for St. Maries (8-5), after going 2 for 4 in the opener.
Kellogg (5-9) faces Priest River on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Timberlake in the first round of the 3A District 1 tournament.
St. Maries travels to Medical Lake on Saturday for a doubleheader to wrap up the regular season, then plays host to Grangeville on Wednesday in the first round of the 2A District 1-2 tournament.

POST FALLS — Gonzaga signee Jacob Rutherford went 2 for 3 with a three-run double in the second inning on senior day, and also struck out two in pitching the final inning of relief in the Trojans’ nonleague victory over the Bulldogs.
Jacob Burton went 2 for 3 and drove in two runs for Post Falls (6-13). Cole Rutherford went 2 for 3 and scored three runs for the Trojans, and senior Cabe Misita went 2 for 4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Senior Austin Higgins made a nice catch in right field to save two runs.
“It was nice to see all those seniors contribute and don’t always get to start, or play a lot,” Post Falls coach Mick Zeller said.
Max Thielbahr and Connor Dodd each had two hits for Sandpoint (7-14).
Post Falls, the No. 4 seed, travels to 5A Inland Empire League champion Coeur d’Alene on Monday at 4 p.m. in the first round of the 5A Region 1 tournament.
Coeur d’Alene went 12-0 in league, with four of those wins over Post Falls.
“We had Coeur d’Alene on the ropes all four games, leading in three of them late,” Zeller said. “I reminded my players, the last two years the 4 seed (Lewiston last season, and Coeur d’Alene in 2017) went to state. I’m excited; we played as well against Coeur d’Alene as we have against anybody.”

Collin Bell and Colton Aragon had two RBIs each for Lakeland (9-9-2), which faces the winner of Monday’s loser-out game between Moscow and Sandpoint in Game 1 of the best-of-3 championship series later Monday at Gorton Field.

ST. MARIES — Hayden Villa hit a three-run home run in the second inning, then struck out the side in the fifth inning to cap a combined no-hitter as the Lumberjacks beat the Wildcats in a nonleague game at City Park.
Shaun Anderson, Tyler Lohman and Villa teamed on the no-no.
Derek Larson and Cole Boag had three hits each for St. Maries, which pulled away with an eight-run second inning.
St. Maries (8-3) hosts the 2A District 1-2 tournament starting on Monday at Legion Field.
No. 2 seed Grangeville plays No. 3 Orofino at 10 a.m., followed by the loser vs. No. 1 St. Maries at noon. The winner of the 10 a.m. game plays St. Maries at 2 p.m.
If a team is 2-0 following Monday’s play, that team advances to state and the tournament is over, and the team that goes 1-1 advances to a state play-in game. If all three teams go 1-1 on Monday, play continues on Tuesday.

COEUR d’ALENE — The Viking boys took two of three in boys singles, but the Timberwolf girls returned the favor to finish the match tied for the second straight time.
“(Coeur d’Alene No. 2 boys singles) Noah (Cobb) just keeps finding a way to win and played another great match,” Coeur d’Alene boys coach Dan O’Connor said. “Lake City is tough, and their No. 1 doubles team (Gabe Gates/Leon Fleck) is really good. It’s always a tough battle with them.”
Coeur d’Alene travels to Sandpoint on Tuesday.
Lake City hosts Lewiston on Monday.
