Bayley qualifies for another pro tour

A little more than three months ago, Derek Bayley was a newly turned professional golfer in search of an avenue to the PGA Tour.

Now, he’s got options.

Bayley, the former Lakeland High star, qualified for the first half of the Mackenzie Tour — also known as PGA Tour Canada — on Friday, finishing tied for sixth at 10-under-par 278 at a qualifier in Courtenay, British Columbia.

In late January, Bayley qualified for the first half of PGA Tour Latinoamerica.

“Now I make some decisions, and decide what events I’m going to play in, and decide what events I’m not going to play in,” Bayley said via phone from Canada on Friday evening.

Bayley is fully exempt for the first six events on the Mackenzie Tour, which starts with a tournament May 23-26 in Vancouver, B.C.

He’s fully exempt for the first eight events on PGA Tour Latinoamerica, which this week is at its fifth stop of the season. Bayley played in the first three events — in Panama, Argentina and Chile — then missed the fourth as he traveled to B.C. to prepare for the Mackenzie Tour qualifier.

The final three Latinoamerica tour events begin on May 16, 23 and 30, respectively. The last two events on that tour overlap with the first two events on the Mackenzie Tour.

PGA Tour Latinoamerica then takes a break for the summer, as it is winter down there.

His finishes in the first half of each tour will determine his status for the second half.

“The one good thing about the Mackenzie Tour is that it’s semi close to home, and they work from west to east, so the first three events are in British Columbia,” Bayley said. “So that really is an advantage for me; it’s not very far from home, and the grass and the weather and everything will feel like home.”

The 12th and final event of the Mackenzie Tour is Sept. 12-15.

Bayley, who graduated from Washington State last fall, missed the cut in his first two pro events, but said the experience helped him deal with the pressure of trying to make the cut in his third event, which he did, finishing 11th in a tourney in Santiago, Chile, and earning $4,375.

“It was definitely interesting,” Bayley said of his first three starts on PGA Tour Latinoamerica. “Three different countries, three events in four weeks, and every country you go to, you have to take a flight, and it’s just something to get used to.

“The second and third events I played in were in Argentina and Chile, in back-to-back weeks, and I played two different types of grass, two different types of climate, and two different types of culture. So It’s all something to get used to, and the more countries that I see, and more places that I go, the better I’m going to be, the better I’m going to handle myself, and be comfortable as time goes on.”

But first, next up for Bayley is a U.S. Open local qualifier Wednesday at TimberStone Golf Course in Caldwell.
