Positive outlook keeps 90-year-old young
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 5 years, 8 months AGO
Colleen “Coke” Hough is celebrating her 90th birthday today. I recently read an article on the subject of 90 being the new 60 and in Coke’s case, I think it might be the new 40 or 50. I’ve known her and her family, including her late husband, Bob, since I was in junior high school. Coke has always had a joie de vivre, i.e.: exuberant enjoyment of life. In her ninth decade she still dances like a “Dancing with Celebrities” pro, and dons a swimsuit and looks good in it while swimming in Lake Coeur d’Alene at the family’s lake house.
It’s not been without challenges to lose your partner of over six decades and make the adjustment to assisted living; but it’s rare to see Coke without a smile. Actually, it’s often more of a mischievous grin.
This evening she will be feted by her family at the Roosevelt Inn from 5 to 7 p.m., if you’d like to celebrate this milestone birthday with her. Odds are there will be dancing!

Going back to work on a Monday morning was a milestone for my husband. Two months since his open heart surgery, almost to the day, Bert was able to return to work at the Lakeland School District. We’ve both embraced each small step of normalcy with gratitude for the doctors, the Kootenai Health team, our family and friends and for every generous gift of meals, companionship and prayers — lots of prayers, in those frightening first days and weeks when neither of us knew what the future held.
The rehabilitation continues and Bert’s taking it slow and steady. His surgeon, Dr. Rob Burnett, cleared Bert to ride his Harley and mow the lawn later in June. Seriously? Which one of those do you think he’ll choose to do first?

On Saturday night Ryan Chapman and Reilley Chapman were crowned king and queen, respectively, of the Lake City High School Senior Prom. They share the same last name and the same parents, Brandie and Mike Chapman. They share the same birthday, and now they share an incredibly fun twin memory of their senior year.

Mother’s Day in 1952 fell on May 14. My mother, Alice Rankin, then 21 years old, gave birth to her second daughter that day: me! Happy Mother’s Day to all!
