OLYMPIA — Othello and Royal City each received funds for construction projects in the new two-year state capital budget that was passed by the Washington state legislature on April 28, according to a press release.

The City of Othello is receiving $347,000 for the renovation and upgrading of the Lions Park baseball fields and restrooms. Mayor Shawn Logan of Othello told the City Council during a meeting on March 25 that the intention is to improve the quality of the field through leveling it, adding a drainage system and putting in a new batters boxes, making the bathrooms ADA-compliant and making an ADA-compliant serving area at the concession stand. The City of Othello has committed between $75,000 and $100,000 to the project.

Othello is also receiving $425,000 for the engineering design of a waste treatment facility.

Other local projects that are receiving funds are the Othello Aquifer Storage and Recharge project, which is receiving $500,000 through the Columbia River Water Supply Development Program; the North I-90 Odessa Aquifer Groundwater Replacement Project, which is receiving $15 million; the Ritzville Business and Entrepreneurship Center, which is receiving $350,000 and Washington State University, which is receiving $57.9 million for various projects including its Global Animal Health Building and a replacement Dairy Heifer Barn.

The next year, they gave baskets to more families. In the years since, the Othello Community Christmas Baskets has become a city-wide event with various groups raising money, food, warm clothes and toys for Othello families in need.
