COEUR d'ALENE — A 36-year-old deep sea fisherman is in jail for allegedly raping a woman last week at a Cherry Hill apartment.
Barry B. White, also known as “Bear” was charged Thursday with three felonies including rape, forcible sexual penetration and concealment of evidence.
Police said White rode a bicycle when he met the alleged victim near east Harrison Avenue May 1, and they shared cigarettes and drinks at the Corner Bar.
White told the victim he was a fisherman but not currently employed and the couple walked across town to a basement apartment near Cherry Hill where the rape allegedly occurred.
The victim told police she fled the residence on the 1000 block of Crestline Drive without her clothing, hiding in a park restroom while White roamed around the area on his bicycle looking for her.
Video footage from cameras at the park and at Avista, across the street from Cherry Hill, show the victim dressed only in a bra and socks walking in the area around 3 a.m..
A later shot shows the victim wearing a plastic garbage bag.
The victim told police she removed a garbage bag from a park receptacle to cover herself before a neighbor gave her some clothes.
Investigators found the victim’s clothing in a garbage bin near Avista, and camera footage shows White riding up to the garbage receptacle on a bicycle and dumping the clothes into it, according to a police report.
After a weeklong investigation that included reviewing footage from several cameras in the area and pinpointing the residence where the rape may have occurred using a real estate website, police interviewed White, who confirmed the timeline leading up to the alleged incident. White told police he did not rape the woman, but went into the restroom at his apartment after he and the woman “had fooled around” and returned to the bedroom to find the woman gone.
White is being held on a $200,000 bond. If he fails to bail out of jail he will have a probable cause hearing within 14 days.
His criminal history includes several alcohol and drug-related offenses.
