At a groundbreaking ceremony April 29, the latest family to receive help from Kootenai Valley Partners Habitat for Humanity dug the first shovels full where their home will be built.

This is the 13th home that Habitat has built in Lincoln County.

Susie Rice, with Habitat, shared a message regarding the most important commandments from Mark Chapter 12 in the Bible: “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. ’There is no commandment greater than these.”

It is this love for their neighbors that motivates the Habitat volunteers to help in seeing they have a roof over their heads.

And on Saturday and Sunday, bicycle riders from all over will be helping out too, participating in the Scenic Tour of the Kootenai River, or STOKR, and contributing to a fundraiser that helps to make those homes in Lincoln County a reality.

Rice said that riders will start out between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Saturday, impacting Highway 2 west. They will depart from the Chamber at 9 a.m.

On Sunday, riders will participate in a “parade” with police escort, starting from the Libby Chamber of Commerce at Highway 2 and Mahoney Road, and traveling to Louisiana Avenue.

According to Rice, there will be 450 riders in STOKR this year and over $37,000 is projected to be raised for Habitat from the ride.

Motorists are asked to use caution and patience when encountering riders.
