Marvelous mamas

COEUR d’ALENE — A sparkling headband fit for royalty was placed in Sarah Donaldson’s freshly braided and dolled-up hair, a sight that brought a great smile to her face when she looked in a hand mirror.
She had her 4-year-old son, Tenisen, on her lap as stylist Diana Clark put on the final touches.
“It’s overwhelming,” Donaldson said, tears springing to her eyes. “Most of the time you feel invisible as a mom. It’s just so incredible for somebody to spend 5 minutes caring about me.”
On Saturday, it was all about making moms feel like the queens they are during the Single Moms Outreach event at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds.
Sponsored by the Heart of the City Church in collaboration with about nine other local churches, Single Moms Outreach had everything for about 700 moms, from clothing to car detailing to manicures to a royal up-do complete with color streaks and a glittery finish.
“The first year I was a single mom, one of my girlfriends was a single mom too, so I bought us both new beach chairs because I knew no one else was going to do anything,” said Ada Rouse, administrative assistant for Heart of the City. “A lot of these moms don’t have that. They’re not going to get anything (on Mother’s Day), so this day is special for them because we do it.”
The day featured plenty of kids activities as well, including bouncy houses, face painting and interacting with local firefighters.
“It’s just a blessing,” said Ellen Smith of Post Falls. “My husband died, so we didn’t celebrate (Mother's Day) after he died until this happened… It’s fun to get out and be pampered and get our hair done together.”
“I love it,” said Ellen’s daughter Nicole, 9, wearing a red plastic fire hat. She added that “basically everything” was her favorite part of the day.
