Meet Jan Pellant, the new artistic director and conductor of the Coeur d'Alene Symphony Orchestra. You can meet him personally on June 22 at 5 p.m. at Rockin’ B Ranch, North Idaho Road, Liberty Lake, Wash.

Generation: I don't identify with any of them.

Career and community involvement: I moved to Coeur d'Alene last August and never stopped admiring this wonderful city and community. I am involved in developing Coeur d'Alene Symphony's cultural outreach to our community and help put Coeur d'Alene, culturally speaking, on the international map.

1. What inspired you to become a musical conductor?

Thanks to family members who were musically involved in Japan, I started to attend orchestra rehearsals since early childhood and I realized I could not live without the magical sound of orchestra around me. Eventually I realized how fascinating it is to be part of the music-making process. Having wonderful friends and colleagues on the stage allowed me to make music with them. I was able to put the diverse orchestra colors, that each instrument has, into one combined musical experience. The conductor is supposed to be like a magician — helping to create unforgettable moments.

2. What is it like to be on an international stage, feeling music flow through you and everyone else in the room?

Those are to me one of the most fascinating moments — these are electrifying moments filled with energy. I feel always very excited and honored to perform — to achieve artistic goals together as a team. I think it is somewhat similar to a soccer game where the players are supported by the fans.

3. How would you describe those perfect moments when the musicians you lead are completely in sync?

I call those moments as being between earth and heaven — those are transcendental moments that are hard to explain, but can be felt by all. To have all three parties — audience, orchestra and conductor — on the same page is the ideal. This is when unforgettable concerts happen.

4. What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?

I do also enjoy jazz, Western music, rock and pop.

5. What was your favorite game growing up, and do you have any go-to games as an adult?

My favorite game is soccer — both watching and playing. This has been my other passion and I still stay involved.
