MARK NELKE/Press A field burner was used on one of the softball fields at Post Falls High School to dry it out faster Saturday for the state 5A softball tournament there.

POST FALLS — On a bizarre weekend which included a 26-hour rain delay, a shortened tournament and a farmer burning one of the infields to help it dry out faster, Lake City came up just short in its bid to parlay an undefeated regular season into a state title.

But amid all that craziness, and before the tears, came an “Oh my God” moment for the ages on Saturday at Post Falls High.

Down to their last out in a de facto quarterfinal game against Eagle, Ashley Kaufman belted a game-tying two-run homer, and the Timberwolves went on to stun the Mustangs 4-3 in eight innings.

“I was originally thinking, get a base hit, a line drive, just get on base — just like we were taught by (head coach) Jesse (Lenz),” a teary-eyed Kaufman said moments after the dramatic blast. “It just happened, so I couldn’t be happier right now.”

But alas, Lake City was unable to carry that momentum into the semifinal game, where the T-Wolves managed one hit off Oakleigh Kearby of Mountain View in a 1-0 loss that ended their season.

“2019 was memorable,” Lake City coach Jesse Lenz said. “One of the best groups we’ve ever had, but even more, seven of the best people to lead this team (as seniors). We never say die.”

Lake City (26-1) finished third after losing in the semifinal game in the abbreviated tournament, where Saturday’s games were shortened to five innings, and the losers bracket was canceled.

Coeur d’Alene (12-9) also finished third, losing 15-7 in the semifinals to Rocky Mountain of Meridian after beating Highland of Pocatello 13-6 in the first round Friday morning.

For the Vikings, back at state for the first time since 2016, it was a trophy well-earned.

“It was a big bummer; I thought we were going to do much better (against Rocky), and I think the girls thought that as well,” first-year Coeur d’Alene coach Bobbi Darretta said. “But honestly, I’m so happy we made it this far; we had 11 girls in the dugout, and that’s all we have in the program. Walking in here, going home with what we did, after losing seasons the last couple years, I know it’s progress for our program, and it’ll just get better.”

Play was halted on Friday shortly before 1 p.m. Just prior to play resuming a little after 3 on Saturday, Highland and Rigby, losers of Friday’s two games, were on their way home, and numerous cell phones captured video of the flames coming from the field-burning truck as it circled the infield.

Because of daylight issues, the title game between Rocky and Mountain View was played under the lights at Ramsey Park in Coeur d’Alene.

Lake City 4, Eagle 3, 8 inn.: The game, suspended from Friday, resumed tied at 1 in the bottom of the second inning.

Eagle took the upper hand when leadoff batter Noelle Foster cranked a two-run homer to right center in the top of the fifth.

The score remained that way until the bottom of the seventh. Ashlynn Allen drew a leadoff walk, but Eagle pitcher Siera Horton retired the next two batters on fly ball.

Kaufman, Lake City’s ace pitcher, worked the count to 2-1, then homered to dead center to tie the game.

“I was just thinking this will probably be the last time I’ll ever play softball,” Kaufman said. “Last time with these girls, and I just had to cherish it, and I didn’t want it to be over yet.”

Gabi Peters replaced Horton, and the game went into the eighth.

Eagle started with a runner on second per the international tiebreaker. Sydney Groves singled to right, but Lake City right fielder Emma Gray threw the runner out at home.

In the bottom half, with Lacey Lemburg on second, Bailee Taylor’s sacrifice bunt was good enough for a base hit, putting runners on first and third. Reilley Chapman then lined a single past the right fielder to score Lemburg and win the game.

“We never said die against Eagle, and AK came up with a huge swing,” Lenz said.

Repeated screams of “Oh my God” came from the Lake City dugout, as well as the T-Wolf cheering section.

“They put their heart out there, but they definitely came in feeling a lot of pressure,” said Eagle coach Nicole Rollins, whose Mustangs were second last year after winning three straight titles. “My baserunning decisions; I’ll never stop being aggressive, but they burned us too.”

Mountain View 1, Lake City 0: Olivia Zufelt’s sharp single up the middle in the fourth inning was the Timberwolves’ lone hit against Kearby, who allowed just four baserunners.

In the fifth, Emma Smith of Mountain View hit a one-out liner over the fence in left for the game’s only run, and Kearby retired the side in the bottom of the inning.

“I’m not going to lie — it’s disappointing, 1-0, five innings on a solo shot,” Lenz said. “I would like to give a shoutout to the field crew, the time spent trying to make it a successful tournament for us, and these seniors and for our team. Holly (Gleaves; Post Falls coach) and Brian (Stranger; former Post Falls coach) did a helluva job, and I appreciate their effort.”

“Honestly, our biggest goal was to make it past the first game,” Lake City senior catcher Jalyssa Beamer said. “We accomplished a lot over the years.”

Rocky Mountain 15, Coeur d’Alene 7: The Grizzlies broke the game open with a nine-run third inning, highlighted by a grand slam by Kaylan Walker and a two-run shot by Lolo Walker two batters later.

Pitcher Natalie Sell hit a pair of solo homers for Coeur d’Alene, and catcher Hailey Lyons added a two-run shot.

“I haven’t been to state since freshman year, so it was nice to end with it,” Sell said. “It just came full circle. It was great to actually end here, and we came farther than I ever thought we would, and I’m just proud of all the girls for getting us here.”

Timberwolves outlast Bulldogs in double OT

COEUR d’ALENE — Sandpoint and Lake City, two programs in rebuilding mode, put on an old-fashioned slugfest of a game that took more than four quarters to decide Friday night.
