COEUR d’ALENE — Talk about an emotion.

Then talk about Timberlake’s day at the state 3A softball tournament at Ramsey Park.

First, they breeze past Snake River to advance to the rain-shortened semifinals.

Then, senior Bernie Carhart hits a grand slam to give them a lead after being down to a final strike in the semifinals.

And again — trailing — another senior, Ashlyn Mallet hits another slam to get the Tigers back into a third-place game with the South Fremont Cougars.

But Timberlake, which entered the day 17-1 came up short to the Cougars, falling 10-7 on Saturday evening to finish fourth.

“In a single-elimination tournament, it’s hard to lose the second game and come back in the next one,” Timberlake coach Casi Lupinacci said. “We had some kids that definitely battled, but it’s hard. You never want to end the season on a loss. But everyone has to but that one team at the end.”

Timberlake finished 18-3.

Rain washed out play on Friday, and then pushed back the start of Saturday’s games to noon.

“The kids had a rough time with it, but not that it’s anyone’s fault, the weather was terrible,” Lupinacci said. “When they do that, you don’t get what you should into that tournament schedule.”

Filer led the semifinal game 4-0 before Carhart’s grand slam gave Timberlake a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning.

“I just figured someone had to step up,” Carhart said. “I was excited that I got the chance to do that. I knew when I swung that it felt good. When I looked again, the fence was broke and the ball was over, so I just kept running.”

Lupinacci, in her fourth year, has led the Tigers to state each year, finishing second in 2017 and tied for fifth in 2018.

“I’m very proud of them,” Lupinacci said. “There were some things that we can learn from for next year. I’m really proud of my seniors, and they all played great. I hope the younger kids can learn from that and continue the tradition next year.”

Timberlake fell behind 9-3 after three innings to South Fremont before Mallet’s slam cut the deficit to 9-7.

“When we played Snake, we were hitting the ball really well,” Lupinacci said. “Against Filer, we kind of pulled off a bit. We just didn’t hit the ball as well as we had been all year. It’s tough to pull it together when we’re making errors behind the pitcher and not hitting the ball.”

“I think we came out strong and then our energy went down,” Carhart said. “It was just kind of a bummer the way it turned out, but our girls really poured their hearts into it.”

South Fremont (16-8) eliminated Priest River in an opening round game.
