Dick Halliday, 73

Richard J. “Dick” Halliday of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, died at home in his sleep on May 16, 2019. He was born Dec. 17, 1945, in Coeur d’Alene to Warwick and Mary (Gilbertson) Halliday. He never ventured far and accumulated great memories of family, childhood, neighborhood and classmates — graduating from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1965 and North Idaho College in 1967 in auto mechanics.

He married a Silver Valley girl, Myrl Lafrenz, on Nov. 22, 1969, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Coeur d’Alene. They were together for 50 years. Ten years later a daughter, Bernadette Caroline was born; and in 1984, son Darrin Richard was born. As years went by the family grew with the addition of ex-son-in-law, Tony Etchechoury; wonderful granddaughter, Lydia Reign; son-in-law, Ira Lee; daughter-in-law, Brenda Finney and darling twin grandsons, Colton Jackson and Kailer Dixson, making a large, loving family.

During his teen years, Dick worked for his uncle, Kyle Bates, at Beaver Lake Stock Ranch. Later on, he worked a little for Stoddard Transfer and Bunker Hill Mining Company. The majority of his working career was at Kaiser Aluminum. After 31 years, he retired in 1999 on medical disability.

Dick loved the outdoors and had many toys to enjoy it, including hunting, fishing, boating, camping, cycle riding and collecting classic cars to cruise in. Through the healthy years of his life, he would always be multitasking. As life slowed down, he enjoyed bonding with people at bi-weekly breakfast and coffee time at the Lakers and 1210. His comment about everyone was that “they are such a nice person.” His heart was incredibly large. He was the go-to guy who could always find anything anyone wanted or knew of someone that could use whatever was being parted with.

From childhood, he usually had a dog for a pet. Dick loved animals and he often did doggie 24-hour care for friends. Dick was a proud member of the Coeur d’Alene Eagles Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an older brother, Bruce; Uncle Kyle and Aunt Gladys Bates and cousin, Bob Bates. He is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren; his brother, Ron and Donna Halliday with nieces, Teresa and Holly; brother, Doug Halliday and Melodie Dixon; sister-in-law, Kay Halliday Millsap with nephews, Steve and Duane; and cousins, Gary and Patti Bates, Randy and Susan Bates, Jim Evenden and Mike Evenden.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2019, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 812 N. Fifth St., Coeur d’Alene, with a reception to follow at the church. Burial will be at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers please support our local Kootenai Humane Society, as he was an avid pet lover.
