Families and children who came out for the Kootenai Kiwanis Family Fun Day in the Park May 18 had a chance to learn and engage with a variety of activities.

Shelby Smith, who has entered a significant amount of work in the Lincoln County Junior Fair over the past six years, said that she brought out some examples of her submissions to try to encourage more children to participate.

Smith said that the number of children participating in the fair has been decreasing over the years.

“It’s a whole lot of fun, and it would be really sad to see it not happen every year,” she said.

Kim Annis, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Bear Specialist for Lincoln and Sanders County, came along with Rory Trimbo, MWP bear conflict technician, to educate about bears and being safe in Montana while still appreciating the beauty of the wildlife here.

“Most bears don’t work very hard for their food,” Annis said. They can eat just about anything, from grass and dandelions to the carcasses of animals that died over the winter. Even bird feeders can attract the attention of a bear, which will happily make a meal of the seeds.
