A Spokane man with multiple felonies who had eluded U.S. Marshals and was holed up in a Coeur d’Alene residence was arrested Thursday by a county SWAT unit.
Jeremy S. Sabo, 35, was charged Friday in Coeur d’Alene First District Court for obstructing police and being a fugitive from justice. He is being held in the Kootenai County Jail without bond.
Sabo was arrested around 7 p.m. Thursday after Coeur d’Alene Police officers tried serving him with a warrant while he was standing in the yard outside a house on the 1700 block of Gilbert Avenue.
Sabo fled into the house and refused to come out. Officers used a bullhorn and intercom system to get him to surrender before calling a SWAT unit made up of police officers and sheriff’s deputies.
“We were informed he had 11 prior felony convictions and was considered a repeat offender,” Capt. Dave Hagar of the Coeur d’Alene Police Department told The Press. “Due to his weapons and criminal history, we requested the assistance of the SWAT Team to ensure the safety of the community and the officers on scene.”
The neighborhood was blocked off and people were told to stay in their homes as police tried to get Sabo to come out of the house.
Hagar said Sabo’s warrants were for a felony firearms violation and escape.
He has an extensive criminal history that also includes drug crimes, according to U.S. Marshals who tracked Sabo from Spokane County.
Marshals said they identified Sabo while doing surveillance in the Coeur d’Alene neighborhood where they knew Sabo had friends. By cross-referencing vehicles parked outside, and by using photographs from social media, they narrowed down their search.
Police watched as Sabo siphoned gas from a nearby vehicle. They identified him by his physical characteristics including his tattoos, according to a police report.
Eventually Sabo surrendered peacefully, Hagar said.
The SWAT Team cleared the area shortly after 7 p.m., police said.
