Flathead boys impress

The final day of the Class AA/B state track and field meet at Legends Stadium was filled with records, PBs (personal bests) and individual achievements for Flathead, Glacer and a host of other competing schools.

And yes, even a trophy. The Flathead boys finished an impressive third. The top five teams for boys were: Missoula Sentinel 109, Billings West 86, Flathead 70, Bozeman 56 and Glacier 50.

The Braves were state runners-up to Glacier a year ago.

“It was totally unexpected,” Flathead coach Dan Hodge said.

“I thought maybe we would get to 45 points, that won’t get you a trophy. After the first day we had 33 points. Fourth at divisionals this year, third at state.”

Flathead won a state title in 2015 in Kalispell.

Flathead had four event winners over the course of two days and three second-place finishes, two by Seth Moon in the long and triple jump.

The Bozeman girls took top team honors with a 112 total. Billings West was second with 86, Missoula Sentinel third with 76, Helena Capital fourth 48 and Helena High fifth with 44.

The Flathead girls with eighth with 26 and Glacier ninth with 17.

Flathead distance star Ben Perrin accomplished a career first on Saturday by winning a state title in the 1,600 with a time of 4:19.02, to go with his 3,200 victory on Friday.

Last year he won the 3,200, but was fourth in the 1,600.

“It means everything to do it here on my home track,” Perrin said.

“It’s the first time (winning) the mile at state. I wanted both in the same year.”

Like his Friday win, Perrin led the 1,600 from start to finish.

“I wanted to go out with everybody,” he said.

“The first two laps they kept behind me a little.”

He ran 2:02 for the final two laps to maintain his lead.

“You never know what will happen at state,” Perrin said.

“I just wanted to come here and win. I wanted a PR (personal record).”

Flathead dashman Chance Sheldon-Allen, sidelined for much of the season with a lower lumbar issue, had a winning and PB time of 10.88 in the 100. The school record in that event is 10.84, set by Craig Galle in 1996.

“It hurts, but I’m doing good,” Sheldon-Allen said of his back.

“I had an amazing start. I was super nervous, my legs were shaking, but I was ready to go,” he said of the start.

“I was loose the whole time. I didn’t get tense. I just ran my race. It felt amazing.”

His season best before state was 11.09.

The best part ...

“I had to show up and perform for my home town,” he said.

He later finished second to Jaden Foster of Sentinel (21.68) in the 200. Sheldon-Allen’s time was 21.72.

Glacier’s Drew Deck capped off a six-event state by winning the 300 hurdles with a PB time of 38.98. He came in with a state best time for all classes at 39.02.

“One of my main goals this year was to get into the 38s,” he said.

“I’m blessed it came at the right time.”

Earlier in the day, Deck finished sixth in the 110 hurdles, but did not place in the triple jump.

“I was overwhelmed with it all,” Deck said of his victory.

“When I heard the time, I was happy.

“It was a smooth race and it felt good. Jace (DeWalt) of Sentinel pushed me around the curve. It was a battle at the end.”

On the disappointing side, javelin defending champion Glacier senior Evan Todd settled for second best this time around. Struggling with a sore back, the best he could throw was 188-7.

He came in with a season best 208-0.

“Pretty disappointing,” he said.

“My back wasn’t in the greatest shape, but sometimes that’s the way the wind blows.”

Todd suffered the back injury last week in Helena at divisionals.

“On my very last throw,” he said.

“I shouldn’t have thrown at divisionals. It was a mud hole (because of the rain).”

The injury limited his bend during his throws.

Todd, however, at least finished the season sharing the best throw of 208-8 with Rylan Ortt of Missoula Sentinel, who won state with that distance.

The Flathead girls 400 relay team of Cerise Lee, Tori Noland-Gillespie, Meaghan Fisher, Mikayla Shinn finished third.

Glacier’s top finisher was Mya McNeely, who was second in the shot put on Friday with a distance of 39-0.

Class B

Bigfork had one individual champion on Saturday in Ashton McAnally in the shot put. She won it on her final throw with a PB distance of 38-5 3/4.

Amy Fjell-Hagan of Deer Lodge was second with a distance of 38-3 1/2.

Bigfork had a pair of second place finishes on the final day with Wyatt Duke, a sophomore, clearing 6-6 in the high jump and the 400 relay team of Heidi Schneller, Jesse Frey, Audrey Buenz and Jordan Nelson.

Three jumpers cleared 6-6 and Duke had one strong attempt at 6-8.

It was a PB at 6-6 for Duke by an inch.

“It was a good day to jump,” he said.

“I love the competition. I always do better with more competition.”

Noah Bouchard of Huntley Project cleared 6-8 to win it.

Eureka’s Karlee Frost finished third in the javelin for a second straight year. Her throw this year at state — 119-10 — was 15 feet shorter than a year ago.

“I was battling with an illness this year,” she said this spring.

“It (state this year) started out bad. My last throw was my best throw.”

Frost had the fifth best throws in the prelims.

“My teammates made me laugh,” she said for the finals.

“I didn’t think about it and just went up there and threw it. It (last throw) felt better. I was disappointed until then.”

Baker and Huntley Project, with 74 points each, shared the girls title.

Colstrip, 63, was third.

Bigfork, 29, was seventh.

Huntley Project won the boys title with 122 points. Manhattan, 43, was second.

Three records were broken on the final day.

Casey Gunlikson of Big Timber set Class B records in the 100 (10.87) and 200 (21.80).

Bradley Graves of Huntley Project set an all-class record in the 100 hurdles (14.14).
