WALLACE –– It’s on to bigger things for Zach Welch.

The Wallace graduate has signed a letter of intent to continue his highlight reel hooping ways at Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake, Washington.

Welch recently wrapped up one of the all time great seasons in Wallace basketball history all while being named to the Idaho 1A DI All State team with averages of 24 points, 4.6 assists, and 2.5 steals per game.

Wallace basketball coach Corey Miller gushed about his admiration of Welch, and rightfully so.

“He just a good kid,” Miller said. “He goes out there and he does all the things you need him to. I’m excited to watch him continue to his career.”

As far as that career goes, no matter what happens from here Miller will always view Welch as one of Wallace’s greats.

This season had many highlights for Welch, from big-time wins to highlight reel dunks, but nothing could top what he did on January 30.

Playing on the road at Clark Fork, Welch went off for 52 points against the Wampus Cats, including shooting 14/17 from the 3-point line and even managing to break the rim on a dunk.

Welch’s 52-point night is the all-time WHS single game scoring record.

Welch was on his way to leading the Miners to their first state tournament berth in a decade when he and his squad ran into the 1A Division I Player of the Year Spencer Schumacher and his eventual state champ Prairie Pirate team, falling 58-50.

“This season and this team were something special, but Zach had a lot to do with that,” Miller said. “He had some moments that will be remembered forever. He was everything that Wallace basketball represents and stands for.”

Armed with insane athleticism and sweet stroke, Welch will take his Steph Curry-like game to Big Bend where the Vikings will happily use Welch’s skill-set to navigate a competitive Northwest Athletic Conference.

“I’m excited to keep playing,” Welch said. “It’s exciting to keep playing. I’m looking forward to the games against NIC (North Idaho College.”
