The Montana Association of School Superintendents has named the Libby School Board as one of two “School Boards of the Year” in 2019.

The association recognizes two boards each year for achievements in policy, infrustructure and educational programming. St. Regis also was honored with the award.

News of the award came as a surprise to the board during its Oct. 14 meeting. Superintendent Craig Barringer, who nominated the board, said the designation is well-deserved.

“The success of our school is due largely to the quality of people that serve on our school board,” Barringer said.

The Montana Association of School Superintendents presented the award at the Montana Conference Educational Leaders conference in Billings.

Barringer expects the plaque to arrive in time for the board’s Nov. 11 meeting.

“Our board has led Libby Schools through many positive expansions of programs despite a student population that has declined, resulting in a loss of funding,” said Barringer.

Barringer also touted the board’s ability to find and win grants.

“Our board has helped to shed light on many grants that have been used to address areas of academic need,” he said.
