COEUR d’ALENE — Down to their last set. Down to their last point. But not out.

The Lakeland Hawks fell behind two sets to none Friday night in their 4A consolation match with Burley, but found a way to keep their season alive with a 12-25, 23-25, 25-22, 26-24, 15-8 victory over the Bobcats at Coeur d’Alene High.

Lakeland (19-11) will face Century (35-9) of Pocatello in today’s consolation bracket final at 9 a.m. at CHS. Bonneville (36-6) and Kuna (14-5) will meet in an 11 a.m. semifinal, with the loser of that match facing the winner of the earlier match.

But before the Hawks, at state for the first time since 2005, deal with today’s action, they were savoring their dramatic comeback.

“We all wanted to prove to each other that we weren’t done playing, that our seniors weren’t done playing,” Lakeland junior outside hitter Katy Ryan said. “It’s huge, and we’ll sleep on it and come back (Saturday) and play as well as we can.”

Earlier Friday, Lakeland opened with a four-set win over Wood River, then lost in four sets to Kuna in the afternoon — forcing an immediate turnaround into its loser-out match with Burley.

The relatively rested Bobcats (27-12) cruised in set one behind the powerful hitting and blocking of 6-foot-3 lefthander Makayle Tolman. She had eight of her team-leading 30 kills in the first set, then ended the second set with a block to thwart a late Lakeland rally.

“In the first two games, it took awhile for the girls to compose themselves and adjust to the tempo,” Hawks coach Kelsie Badger said. “The tempo of the game agaisnt Kuna was must faster than the tempo against Burley, and it took a while to adjust.”

Eventually, the 6-foot-3 Ryan and fellow junior Daphne Carroll began finding holes in Burley’s front-row block, with Carroll cranking out four kills after the teams were tied at 18 in the third set. A kill from Ryan and a block from senior Jenny Wirtz closed out the set and gave Lakeland a little spark.

“We had more options (on offense) and eventually that helped us,” Badger said. “I told the girls at the start of game 3 they needed to dig deep or else this would be our last game of the season.”

The fourth set was close throughout, with Burley moving within one point of victory as Kaia King’s kill made it 24-23 Bobcats.

But Carroll evened the score with a kill, Ryan scored a point with a second-shot tip, then the Lakeland lefthander cranked a kill down the line as Lakeland fans erupted in the balcony.

Burley took a brief 5-4 lead in the fifth set, but a sprawling dig from senior Keely Devore led to a Ryan kill, and it was all Lakeland after that. Carroll finished the match with an ace.

“I wasn’t nervous; I was excited,” Carroll said of serving on the final point. “I have so much confidence in my teammates. I knew even if I didn’t hit a good serve, we were going to win.”

Carroll finished with 22 kills, 11 digs and three aces for Lakeland, with Ryan adding 22 kills, three aces and two blocks. Bethany Johnson had four blocks; Abigail Neff had 38 assists; Olivia Cooper had 29 digs; and Devore had 12 digs and saved the ball numerous times as she subbed in along the Hawks’ back row.

King had nine kills for Burley, with Toman and Natalie Hepworth combining for six blocks.

Kuna d. Lakeland 23-25, 25-16, 25-20, 26-24: The Hawks’ Carroll split a pair of Kavemen defenders for a kill to close out the first set, but Kuna took control in the second and third sets. Mikayla Yore finished off the second set with a kill, then Kuna senior Ryann Halladay blasted one crosscourt to put the Kavemen in command.

Set four was close throughout, with Lakeland taking a 21-20 lead on Carroll’s kill. With the score tied, Kuna’s Courtney Weatherby rolled a kill along the net tape, and it fell on Lakeland’s side of the court. She had a more conventional kill to make it 25-24, then a Lakeland hitting error ended the match.

The Hawks were led by Carroll’s 19 kills and nine digs; Ryan had 16 kills, four blocks and three aces; Johnson had three blocks; Neff 28 assists; and Cooper 19 digs.

Lakeland d. Wood River 25-21, 25-17, 23-25, 25-23: Playing with the momentum and a 2-0 lead, the Hawks knew where their offense could find it again.

Carroll’s ace gave Lakeland a 23-22 lead, then Ryan closed the match with a pair of kills as the Hawks held off the Wolverines in an opening round match.

“I told them in a timeout, ‘we’re still ahead in this. We’re up 2-1,’” said Badger, whose team trailed 16-13 before going on a late run in the fourth set. “I told them we could still do this. We just had to keep fighting, pushing and show that we weren’t tired and continue to work hard.”

Carroll, a senior outside hitter, finished the match with 11 kills and seven digs. Ryan, a right-side hitter, had 19 kills, six blocks and three aces.

“Those two, those are the two we count on in the clutch moments,” Badger said. “And we’ve got our young ones like (sophomores) Addi (Addisen Kiefer) and Bethany (Johnson) that come in and have those kind of hits every now and then that shake up the defense a little bit. Those are always cool to have too.”

It was the first win at state for Lakeland since 2001, when the Hawks finished fifth in the 3A tournament.

“The girls were nervous this morning,” Badger said. “Even with the first few points we took from them. Anywhere we play, there’s going to be some nerves. But our girls practice hard, come out and fight hard for everything they get.”
