J.C. Finstad has been taking a load of his apples to Newport every day for the past week. He is building a fruit cellar on his place to store the balance of his apple crop.

All proceeds for veterans

The Veterans of Foreign Wars are again sponsoring an Armistice Day celebration at Wright’s Hall, Saturday, Nov. 11. The feature attraction will be the “Days of ’49.” There will be games, dancing, bar, floor show and many other amusements. All proceeds will be used for welfare and veterans’ relief.

New clothing store opens

Formal opening of the new ladies’ ready-to-wear store, the Style Shop, will be Nov. 5, according to owners Susan Hopper and Helen Loris. The shop is located just south of Phi’s Club in the building formerly occupied by the Priest River Sport Shop.

60 Years Ago — 1959

Big mack taken

Burt Hunter of Bonners Ferry landed a 48-pound mackinaw trout at Priest Lake Friday, Oct. 30.

The huge fish, one of the big ones taken this season, was checked in at Parsons Sports Center for official registration in the Field and Stream Fishing Contest.

50 Years Ago — 1969

Reloading facility begins operation

Priest River’s first chip reloading facility goes into operation this week following Wednesday’s official opening of the equipment, located on the Great Northern railroad siding adjoining Montgomery Street. The $75,000 plant financed by the Longview Lumber Company will enable local sawmills with chippers to truck their chips to the reloader, where they will go by rail to the Longview Fiber Company’s Longview, Wash., chip plant. Local mill operators signed up to use the facility on the opening date are Merritt Bros. Lumber Company, Priest River, and Binarch Lumber Company at Lamb Creek.

40 Years Ago — 1979

Sports auction Saturday

Money collected from this year’s second annual “Coach’s Auction” will go mainly towards the purchase of uniforms for junior high and high school athletes in Priest River, said football coach Bob Ruiz Tuesday. Typical of what’s being donated by local businesses are weekends for two at Hill’s Resort, a case of Pepsi from Frizzy O’Leary’s, units of lumber from Merritt Bros, and Louisiana-Pacific, plus much more. “We raised over $2,000 last year,” Ruiz said.

30 Years Ago — 1989

Cooke resigns

State Sen. Karen Cooke, D-Priest River, resigned last week, citing economic reasons for leaving the job. In an interview from her new home in Arizona, Cooke said economic reasons will keep her from returning to Priest River to finish the second year of her first term.

20 Years Ago — 1999

Bazaar & bake sale scheduled

A Holiday Bazaar and bake sale will be held at the Community Congregational church on Saturday, Nov. 6 from 9 a.m. to mid-afternoon. A lunch of soup or chili, French bread, pie and coffee will also be served. Proceeds from this annual event will be divided between the Priest River Food Bank and the Joy in the Morning women’s Bible study, to help with a future mission trip to Tornilo, Texas.

Election turnout low

Voters did not turn out in force to vote on Tuesday in the city elections. The position of mayor and two council seats were unopposed.

Mayor Jim Martin and councilmembers Jeff Connolly and Peggy George were reelected, 43 votes for Martin, 42 for George, and 47 for Connolly.

A total of 55 electors voted.
