BONNERS FERRY — A brand new family fitness center will be open soon in Bonners Ferry.

Three business partners — professor Sam Brown of Bonners Ferry Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu; Brad Anderson, a Second Degree Taekwondo Black Belt; and Jared Christman, head fitness trainer — have come together to build a gym on Main Street in Bonners Ferry.

Apex Fitness & Martial Arts is the name of Bonners Ferry’s newest gym facility addition.

“Everything is brand new. Every piece of equipment is brand new,” said Brown. “We have invested big, we want to make a really nice facility, something that Bonners Ferry has never seen, totally different than anything that’s ever been here.”

The difference is the new gym will host a number of classes and operate under the definition of a functional movement gym.

Martial arts is a big focus for the gym, as the motivation to build a larger gym came from the successful growth of Brown’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Self-Defense training gym located on U.S. 95 at Three-Mile.

Brown has owned and operated the Three-Mile location for about 4½ years, and has seen a very large growth in interest and membership with the martial arts gym.

The Three-Mile location will close soon and all classes formerly held there will be moved to the new location.

In addition to martial arts training, Apex will offer a large selection of group fitness training to include Zumba, high intensity interval training, strength and conditioning classes, a younger children’s gymnastics program and fitness classes for ages 10 and older.

“We will also offer boxing classes,” said Brown.

“Downstairs will have 12 six-foot heavy bags in the boxing area,” said Brown. “We can have around 30 people boxing at the same time.”

The new gym’s roomy configuration will allow larger groups of people to attend classes.

“We could have big groups participating in the classes of about 20-30 people,” said Brown.

Anderson, the Taekwondo black belt, is excited to be a business partner in the gym venture.

“I have been working out with Sam and his brother for the past three years,” said Anderson. “The kids’ program at Three-Mile began to get too big, so we sat down and started crunching numbers.”

The business partners devised a plan and put it into action.

“We knew we could make this happen, we could bring a family fitness center here,” said Anderson.

“This is just the beginning of our plan, we have big plans, we want to expand to a much bigger facility, it’s going to take more time,” said Brown.

The new gym is scheduled to open this month on a date to be announced.

Apex Gym is located at 6686 Main St. They can be reached at apexfitgym.com.

Proposed hours of operation for members is from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. and for non-members, staffed business hours are from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
