PRIEST RIVER — A Newport man surrendered after a two-hour standoff with law enforcement officers on Thursday.

Dustin William Simpson was charged with a resisting arrest after holing up in a residence in the 300 block of Kluth Street. Simpson was also the subject of two felony arrest warrants at the time of his arrest, court records show.

Priest River Police Officer Tanner Bodie was aware of the warrants when he contacted Simpson as he was walking at 11th and Beardmore. Simpson attempted to claim he was somebody else and his brisk pace turned into a run, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Simpson, 35, cut through yards before taking refuge in a residence purportedly owned by the mother of Simpson’s girlfriend. Simpson’s girlfriend arrived at the scene and unsuccessfully attempted to persuade officers that he was not in the residence, the affidavit alleges.

Officers could not obtain consent to search the home, prompting them to obtain a search warrant.

Simpson, however, surrendered peacefully before it was executed, court records indicate.

Simpson was sought for arrest for failing to comply with the terms of his pretrial release by failing to submit to drug testing in a methamphetamine and heroin possession case and failing to appear in court on another meth possession case, court records show.
