CROSS COUNTRY

Junior Olympic race slated for Saturday in Coeur d’Alene: The North Idaho XC club will host the first race of the USATF Junior Olympic season on Saturday on the grounds at Lake City High School, starting at 11a.m.

Teams in attendance from the Inland Northwest Association include Spokane, Yakima, Tri-Cities and North Idaho.

Race times are: 11 a.m., U8 boys/girls (2,000 meters); 11:30 a.m., U9-10 girls (3,000 meters); Noon, U9-10 boys (3,000 meters); 12:30 p.m., U11-12 girls (3,000 meters); 1 p.m., U11-12 boys (3,000 meters); 1:30 p.m., U13-14 girls (4,000 meters); 2 p.m., U13-14 boys (4,000 meters); and 2:30 p.m., U15-18 boys/girls (5,000 meters).

Runners will line up on the soccer field and wind around the campus tennis courts and baseball fields, utilizing the gently rolling hills to play to NIXC’s strengths. Spectating is free and open to the public. Food vendors will be located in the Lake City High School parking lot.

Last year, North Idaho XC produced 12 All-Americans and one national champion.

“This is the first time the Association race has been held in our own backyard, and we’ve planned a memorable race day,” North Idaho XC coach Erin Lydon Hart said.

Top 35 runners and top 5 teams will advance to the Pacific Northwest Regional race Nov. 23 in Eugene, Ore., where athletes from Washington, Oregon and North Idaho will compete for top 30 positions or top 5 teams for a chance at national titles.

The national championships are Dec. 14 in Madison, Wis.
