RATHDRUM — Taryn Soumas scored 23 points to lead the 3A Timberlake Tigers to a 52-36 win over the 4A Lakeland Hawks in the season opener for both schools at Hawk Court on Saturday.

“We’re still kind of learning to play together and introducing four or five kids to the varsity level of play,” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. “Timberlake was certainly more polished in the first half. We did a good job of battling back and it felt like a game in the second half. We saw some good things from some kids that hadn’t played a varsity minute before. We would have liked to have played better in the first half, but some are still learning everyone’s name.”

Katy Ryan had nine points, eight rebounds and six blocked shots for Lakeland, which travels to Bonners Ferry on Tuesday.

Taylor Suko scored 14 points for Timberlake, which visits Post Falls on Tuesday.

Baylee Blackmore added 14 points for 3A Bonners Ferry, which plays host to Lakeland on Tuesday.

Freshman Taci Watkins scored 10 points to lead 2A St. Maries, which has just three returning players with varsity experience.

“We have a huge lack of experience,” said Kim O’Connor, making her debut as Lumberjacks’ head coach. “But I thought the girls did great. They played hard; ran the floor well. We missed a lot of shots, and they didn’t. We had a lot of turnovers in the first half, and we cut them in half in the second half.”

Jenna Holder added eight points and six rebounds for St. Maries, which travels to Sandpoint on Tuesday.
