100 Years Ago — 1919

Rare fox taken

Kane Littleton and Joe Hall of Steptoe, Wash., while hunting near Priest Lake, brought down one of the finest bucks that has ever been secured in this country.

Littleton and Hall also shot a fine specimen of black fox, the only one of its kind ever seen here.

The fur is very valuable.

90 Years Ago — 1929

Northern Lights dazzle

Residents of Priest River were treated to a beautiful display of Northern Lights at about 11 p.m. Sunday. The lights started in the northeastern part of the sky passing to the northwestern side.

All colors of the rainbow were represented in the lights.

80 Years Ago — 1939

Engineers survey river

R. C. Hack and A. D. Galluci, U. S. engineers from the Seattle office, last week made a survey of the Pend d’Oreille between Priest River and Sandpoint and also the river below here at Albeni Falls, Box Canyon, and Metaline Falls.

The survey is being made with the idea of a flood control program being instituted to control the level of Lake Pend d’Oreille. It is expected that a dam will be put in at Albeni Falls.

70 Years Ago — 1949

Ladies chorus to be formed

Plans are being made to organize a ladies’ community chorus. The main objective is to present a concert at the Third District Convention of the Idaho Federated Women’s Club, which will be held in Priest River in April.

60 Years Ago — 1959

Little damage to railroad coach

The local fire department put out a smoldering fire in the flooring of the last coach in the Western Star Great Northern passenger train.

The eastbound train experienced trouble with a frozen water line in the last coach and had been held up at Newport to have the line thawed. When the train arrived in Priest River at 9 a.m. a smoldering fire was discovered in the floor of the car.

There was little damage.

50 Years Ago — 1969

Rockets built and launched

Elementary school students in Mrs. Brown’s 5th and 6th grade class are studying conditions in space and the problems of space flight. To illustrate the principles of lift-off, mid-air ignition, and recovery, each student constructed a model rocket.

Each rocket fired 1,000 feet into the air and was brought back to the sender via parachute.

40 Years Ago — 1979

Boxing tourney set

Priest River’s first PRYAA-sponsored boxing match will be put on at the junior high gym Saturday, Dec. 8, according to Coach Vern Savage.

He said boxers Ryan Kelly, Mark Nelson, Matt Barrett, Wayne Savage and either Roy Savage or Jeff Connolly will round out the Priest River squad.

30 Years ago — 1989

Sewer work stopped

The project to extend the sewer lines to the Priest River Industrial Park has been placed on hold until spring.

A shortage of materials and the threat of winter weather has prompted the contractor to request a deadline extension.

20 Years Ago — 1999

Four Spartans awarded honors

Four Priest River Spartans earned all-league honors. Three players were on the defense. Freshman Brandon Goins, Linebacker Rylan Wood, and Randy Simons, defensive back, picked up Intermountain League Football Awards. Offensively, Dustin Wardrop was selected for his performance on the Spartan offensive line.

PRAR says thanks

Priest River Animal Rescue would like to thank Dave Olson, owner of Sunrise Plumbing, for his generous donation of materials and over 300 hours of labor to the conversion of a pole building into a new dog kennel building, which will be much easier to clean and with quarantine and isolation facilities.
