Defeating Lakeland

Both boys and girls PRLHS basketball teams scored wins over the Lakeland Hawks over the weekend. The varsity boys shot 49 percent from the floor and nine for 18 from the three-point line to open their season with a 68-50 win at Lakeland Saturday. Junior Melissa Hopkins had 16 points and 14 rebounds to lead the girls past Lakeland 43-37 Friday night.

Elsaesser honored

The Idaho State Bar announced that Priest River resident J. Ford Elsaesser, a Sandpoint attorney, is the recipient of Professional Award for the First District. Elsaessser is known as the “premier bankruptcy practitioner in North Idaho.”

Food bank has busy holiday

The Priest River Food Bank gave out over 100 food baskets to the needy over the Thanksgiving holiday. The baskets feed about 290 people. The baskets were completely donated by members of the House of the Lord and the Community Congregational Church.

Accident mars weekend

A self loader from Merritt Brothers and a log loader from Mountain Gem Log Homes were called in to separate wreckage on Highway 2 east of Laclede Friday afternoon. Keith Parrish, Newport businessman and a rural Priest River resident, lost his life in a collision with a Nelson Trucking Company log truck under slippery driving conditions.

G-P assumes possession

Georgia Pacific has assumed possession and active management of Hedlund Lumber Company sawmills and wood chip production facilities in northern Idaho and Washington, including a mill at Priest River.

60 Years Ago — 1959

Fire destroys lake home

Fire of undetermined origin completely destroyed the Frank Anselmo Sr. summer home and contents on the west side of Priest Lake Friday evening, Nov. 20. Mr. and Mrs. Anselmo had left the home at about 3:30 in the afternoon to go to their Priest River residence to assist their daughter, Mrs. Jackson Miller, who is ill. The Millers are living in the Anselmo town house. The flames were first seen by Ernest Olson, Priest Lake resident, about 5:30 p.m.

70 Years Ago — 1949

Dinner meeting held

About 30 Kiwanians and ladies from Newport joined with Priest River Friday evening for a joint ladies’ night dinner meeting held in the high school library. The dinner was cooked and served by the school’s economics girls.

80 Years Ago — 1939

New high school construction under way

The final word was given Saturday by Gene Cyr, WPA district engineer, for the starting of work on the construction of the new high school building for Independent School District No.13. The location of the building, on the Beardmore site originally chosen by the board, was staked out and the basement excavation started Monday morning. (Priest River Jr. High School now.)

Coolin road good to travel

The Coolin road is in very good shape since the recent snows, according to Stanley Jones. The snow on the upper end of the road is from 12-14 inches deep and is well packed, making the road good for automobile traffic.
