I grew up in the Tri-Cities, Wash., and have always loved to write. I attended the University of Washington, where I earned a double major in journalism and political science, with an area of emphasis in history. I am the fifth out of six kids — don't believe any of the stories that my siblings tell. To be able to tell others stories and take photos for a living is a dream come true — and I considered myself blessed to be a community journalist. When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, hiking and spending time outdoors, genealogy, reading, and watching the UW Huskies and the Seattle Seahawks. I am a servant to my cat, Frankie, who yes, will eat anything and everything in sight … even wedding cookies. | November 27, 2019 12:00 AM

SANDPOINT — The rainbows were biting Tuesday as the Lake Pend Oreille Idaho Club’s Thanksgiving Derby neared the midway point.

“The long-awaited rainbow bite happened today,” board member Dave Gillespie said in an email announcing Tuesday’s results. “As there is a high wind warning for (today) there may not be many added to the list until the weekend as there is no derby fishing on Thanksgiving Day.”

Denton McGlothlin of Sagle nabbed a 23.68-pound, 36 1/2-inch beauty on Tuesday to claim the top spot in the rainbow trout adult division, with Mike Blackstone of Sagle joining him on the leaderboard in the division with a 20.16-pound, 35 1/2-inch rainbow. Mike Mitale of Coeur d’Alene, who hooked a 19.44-pound, 33 3/4-inch fish Monday, dropped to third. Catching his way to fourth-place in the division is James Carothers of Sagle, who caught an 18.58-pound rainbow that measured 33 inches.

Becky Sturgis of Coeur d’Alene continues to hold the top spot in the adult Mackinaw division with the 17.58-pound Mackinaw measuring 37 inches she caught on Saturday, the derby’s opening day. In second is Coeur d’Alene’s Don Houk, who caught an 11.22-pound, 29-inch Mack on Monday, followed by Art Webb with a 6.36-pound, 25 1/2 inch Mack in third, Dale Greene with a 4.66-pound, 25-inch fish in fourth, and Kenny Breeden with a 3.33-pound, 21-inch Mack in fifth.

Bert Dennett is ninth with a 1.76-pound, 17-inch fish and wrapping up the top 10 is Paul Millar with a 1.64-pound, 18-inch fish.

While there are no entries yet in the Youth A division, in the Youth B division, Lauren Porter continues to hold the lead in the category with an 18.18-pound, 32-inch rainbow. In second place is Madison Shaw Clary, who caught a 13.9-pound, 28 3/4-inch rainbow. Claiming third spot on the list is Savannha Landingham, who caught a 6.30-pound, 23-inch rainbow on Sunday.

County OKs library boundary changes

A boundary line adjustment between the county's two library districts was formally approved by Bonner County commissioners at a meeting last week to approve the issue. The proposal realigns the boundary line between the East Bonner County and West Bonner library districts to match those of the Lake Pend Oreille and West Bounty County school districts. While the measure was unanimously approved by the two library districts on Aug. 20, 2024, that decision needed to be codified by the commissioners. The Board of County Commissioners approved the measure in a unanimous 3-0 vote.
