Area school districts hire many new teachers

School is well underway for the year. Before the doors opened, school districts ensured that they had enough personnel to make the school year run smoothly.

This year, Mattawa hired 22 new teachers, fewer than it hired last year. The teachers came from the Tri-Cities, Moses Lake, Ellensburg, Montana and Nebraska. Two of them were hired for specialty positions of Intervention Specialist and Positive Behavior Intervention Specialist. The rest filled general elementary school classrooms, Spanish, science, math, physical education and special education classrooms. One is the Career and Technical Education teacher.

Within the district, 16 teachers changed jobs. Sixteen new para-pros were hired.

In the Royal School District, 20 new teachers were hired. They came from Moses Lake, Ellensburg, Othello, Orondo, Quincy, Spokane, Ritzville and Idaho. One graduated from Royal High School. Five of the teachers are at Red Rock Elementary School. Royal Intermediate School received three new teachers, in the areas of science, special education and social studies. Two teachers were hired at Royal Middle School in a technology/math combination and social studies. Royal High School positions for social studies/history, English, Agriculture/Agriculture Mechanics Teacher/FFA advisor, math and the resource room. Other positions hired in the district include coordinator of Health Services, School Psychologist, K-6 Interventionist and K-6 Bilingual Trainer.

Within the district, nine teachers changed jobs. Six new classified staff members were hired.

The Othello School District hired 36 new teachers. They came from Washington state, Oregon, Idaho, Minnesota and North Dakota. This year, they hired more teachers than last year. They also hired 11 new para-pros.

The Warden School District did not respond to questions about their new staff prior to publication of this article.

OTHELLO — About 45 years ago, four volunteer firefighters decided to make Christmas food and gift baskets and give them to seven families who needed some extra help. The next year, they gave baskets to more families. In the years since, the Othello Community Christmas Baskets has become a city-wide event with various groups raising money, food, warm clothes and toys for Othello families in need.
