OTHELLO — The Xi Beta Xi will hold their annual silent auction fundraiser on Tuesday, Oct. 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. It will be held at the Othello Eagles Aerie No. 3396 on 127 E. Larch St.

Xi Beta Xi is a chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, a women’s organization.

“It is primarily a social and cultural organization that incorporates service as part of its activities,” said Linda Brady, one of the members. “There are four chapters in Othello and Xi Beta Xi is one of them. Our group has fifteen members at this time.”

The group has been hosting the food bank fundraiser for 10 years. It started when they wanted to do a service project for the community of Othello.

“The response was so good from the community and the other Beta groups in Othello that we decided to hold it every year on the second Tuesday evening of October,” Brady said. “It is just a silent auction and in the past years usually around $1,500. But last year we raised $2,500, which was amazing.”

In addition to the food bank fundraiser, the Beta Sigma Phi groups collectively give a graduating high school student a college scholarship. Xi Beta Xi sells Christmas wreaths as a fundraiser.

All proceeds from the Othello Food Bank silent auction will go directly to the food bank.

Othello looking for donations for annual Christmas baskets

OTHELLO — About 45 years ago, four volunteer firefighters decided to make Christmas food and gift baskets and give them to seven families who needed some extra help. The next year, they gave baskets to more families. In the years since, the Othello Community Christmas Baskets has become a city-wide event with various groups raising money, food, warm clothes and toys for Othello families in need.
