We’ve reached the dog days of Gridiron Guesses this year — literally.

It’s the week before league play begins in the 5A Inland Empire League, 4A IEL, (3A) Intermountain League and (2A) Central Idaho League.

So for the second straight year, Mark and Jason have turned their picks over to the dogs — Mark to his 9-year old dachshunds, Kenzie and Bella, Jason to his 12-year-old beagle, Jack.

How they made their picks ... well, we’ll leave that to your imagination.

As for last week, the humans fared, well, humanely.

Both Mark and Jason went 4-1 on high school picks, Jason correctly picking Highland to beat Coeur d’Alene, Mark getting even with Timberlake’s romp over St. Maries.

Mark went 1-2 on college picks, Jason 2-1. Jason picked Utah to beat WSU; both took a beating with Idaho’s loss at Northern Colorado.

The totals — Mark is 21-8 on high school picks, 12-6 on college, for a 33-14 total.

Jason is 22-7 on high school picks, 14-4 on college, for a 36-11 total record and a three-game lead.

HIGH SCHOOL

All games Friday at 7 p.m. except where noted

Coeur d’Alene (3-2) at Central Valley (4-0)

NELKE: The Vikings won on their last two trips to CV, in 2017 and in ‘15, but neither one came easy. CV owns a 17-7 win over Ferris, a team which ran over Lake City.

Coeur d’Alene, 33-28

ELLIOTT: Coeur d’Alene bounces back after a tough one in Pocatello last Friday night. Could be the beginning of a nice run for the Vikings.

Coeur d’Alene, 35-28

Lake City (3-2) at Sandpoint (3-2)

NELKE: This will be a telling game for the Timberwolves, in a tough environment at Barlow Stadium in Sandpoint. The Bulldogs opened some eyes last week by throttling Lewiston 30-0 in Sandpoint.

Lake City, 30-27

ELLIOTT: Sandpoint played Post Falls pretty tough in the season opener for both this year. Lake City might have just enough this week to get the job done.

Lake City, 28-24

Post Falls (4-1) vs. Lewis and Clark (1-3)

Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Joe Albi Stadium, Spokane

NELKE: Playing on turf is not a bad thing for a team that likes to play fast, and open it up. Lewis and Clark had CV beaten until the Bears scored the game’s last 10 points to win 31-28 last week at Albi.

Post Falls, 49-35

ELLIOTT: Post Falls rolls into 5A Inland Empire League play with a big win at Joe Albi Stadium.

Post Falls, 49-28

Timberlake (4-0) at Lakeland (2-3):

NELKE: This should be a good game, though Lakeland has won eight of the last nine games between these in-district rivals.

Lakeland 35-32

ELLIOTT: Lakeland looked pretty good in an nonleague loss to Post Falls last week. Timberlake has looked good all season so far.

Timberlake, 38-35

St. Maries (3-2) at Bonners Ferry (0-4)

NELKE: The 2A Lumberjacks bounce back from their first loss to a team from the (3A) Intermountain League since 2015, and start another streak against the IML.

St. Maries, 46-6

ELLIOTT: We’ll find out plenty about St. Maries next week when the Lumberjacks host Grangeville in a key 2A Central Idaho League game. As for this one ...

St. Maries, 38-14

Wallace (0-4) at Lakeside (3-0):

NELKE: Hey, didn’t we just see you last week? Yes, these teams played last Friday in Silverton. The rematch is in Plummer.

Lakeside, 30-12

ELLIOTT: These two used to play for the right to advance to the 1A Division I playoffs. Lakeside takes a step toward the playoffs in its final year at the Division II level before re-joining Wallace next fall.

Lakeside, 48-10

COLLEGE

Weber State (2-2, 0-0 Big Sky) at Idaho (2-3, 0-1)

Saturday, 2 p.m.

NELKE: Which Vandal team shows up — the one that beat a highly ranked Eastern Washington team two weeks ago, or the one who lost to a previously winless Northern Colorado squad last week?

Weber State, 15-13

ELLIOTT: If Idaho plays with a chip on its shoulder like the one they had a few weeks ago, then they win this game. If they don’t then consider this the start of a long fall in Moscow.

Weber State, 34-28

Boise State (4-0, 1-0 Mountain West) at UNLV (1-3, 0-1)

Saturday, 7:30 p.m.

NELKE: Boise State is coming off a bye, but rust shouldn’t be a factor this week.

BSU, 56-7

ELLIOTT: Boise State improves to 5-0 in a hurry.

BSU, 49-10

Eastern Washington (2-3, 1-0) at Sacramento State (2-2, 0-0)

Saturday, 6 p.m.

NELKE: Sac State played Arizona State and Fresno State tough in its two losses. Eastern has yet to fire on all cylinders against a school its own size. Still ...

EWU, 31-27

ELLIOTT: While they might not have shown it in the recent matchup with Idaho, Eastern gets back on track this week with a big win over Sacramento State.

EWU, 35-28
