COEUR d’ALENE — Saturday’s final day of play in the 5A Inland Empire League — at least in the boys ranks — will determine everything moving forward.
Thanks to a 3-3 draw between Coeur d’Alene and host Lake City on Wednesday at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex at Lake City High, three teams — Post Falls, Coeur d’Alene and Lake City — could be in line to host a semifinal game. Regionals begin on Oct. 12, with the winners from that day advancing to state as the region has two bids to state this year.
Post Falls (8-1, 4-1 5A IEL) can wrap up the league title with a win against visiting Lake City on Saturday. Coeur d’Alene (6-2-1, 3-1-1) can clinch with a win over visiting Lewiston, along with a Lake City win at Post Falls. Lake City (7-2-3, 2-2-1) could jump Coeur d’Alene with a win Saturday and a loss by the Vikings to the Bengals (0-5 in league).
“The Lake City/Coeur d’Alene game is always a battle and tonight was no different,” Lake City coach Alan Rich said. “We allowed an early goal, which is never the way you want to start, but the teams’ credit, they remained composed and fought back with an equalizer 10 minutes later. The guys played well on both sides of the ball, passed well, and played quality team soccer. We were all even at 2-2 at the half and neither team ever had more than a one goal lead, so the game could have gone either way right to the end.”
