A potential slugfest in the Dome

Points could be at a premium today, when Idaho plays host to Weber State in an important early season Big Sky Conference football clash at the Kibbie Dome.

Idaho (2-3, 0-1 Big Sky) stumbled in its conference opener last week at previously winless Northern Colorado. It’s the Big Sky opener for Weber State (2-2), which is ranked fifth in the FCS coaches poll, and fourth in the media poll.

Last week, the Wildcats downed No. 9 Northern Iowa 29-17 in Ogden, Utah.

Weber leads the Big Sky in fewest passing yards allowed per game (202.3), and is 10th in the nation and first in the conference in scoring defense, allowing 16.5 points per game.

“They’re good on defense, there’s no question,” Idaho coach Paul Petrino said. “Their front seven is good, they have different ways to get after you pressure-wise. The biggest thing you have to do is block their front.”

Weber is led by defensive end Jonah Williams, a 6-foot-5, 275-pound defensive end from Rocky Mountain High in Meridian.

“They want to win with defense and special teams. We have to make sure we stay on the field offenseively, and not turn the ball over.”

Earlier in the week, Petrino said the Vandals weren’t sure who they would face at quarterback.

Junior Jake Constantine, the Boise State transfer, has missed the last two games with a knee injury. Kaden Jenks, a sophomore from Royal City, Wash., started the last two games and is listed as the starter on this week’s two-deep.

Rashid Shaheen, a junior wide receiver, is “as good a skill player as anybody in the league,” Petrino said. “He can fly.”

He has three of Weber’s four TD receptions. He also returns punts and kickoffs.

Idaho leads the Big Sky and is eighth in the nation in third-down defense, stopping their opponents 72.3 percent of the time on third down.

It’s the first meeting between the two teams since 1995, Idaho’s last season in the Big Sky before spending the next 22 years in FBS.
