SANDPOINT — Lake City lost starting quarterback Chris Irvin to what is believed to be a broken collarbone on the second drive of the game, a 39-14 loss to the Sandpoint Bulldogs at Barlow Stadium on Friday.

“We had to go with a sophomore (Josiah Weaver), and it’s a tough situation for somebody like him to come in,” Lake City coach Brian Fulp said. “Those were his first varsity reps ever.”

Sandpoint outscored Lake City 20-0 in the second quarter to take a 26-7 halftime lead.

“We did not execute at the end of the first half at all,” Fulp said. “We gave up a punt return touchdown, threw a pick-6. I thought with everything that happened, we fought hard. Losing your starting quarterback is tough mentally, but I don’t think we folded. Going into next week, we’ll get him coached up and he’ll be ready to go.”

Uriah Chavez ran for 181 yards and two touchdowns for Lake City (3-3), which opens 5A Inland Empire League play at Post Falls next Friday.

Christian Niemela caught two of Jaxon Pettit’s three touchdown passes for Sandpoint (4-2). Gerrit Cox returned a punt for a score, and Elijah Larson had the pick-6.

Sandpoint visits Moscow to open 4A IEL play next Friday.
