The American Legion Post 129 in Paradise, had its second cookout Friday.

Customers could buy a food plate for only $10.

Every Friday, throughout the winter, in order to help the Legion, and to bring in more customers, Commander Darin King will be doing a cookout. This will be the second year he has done this and has had great success in the past.

Last week he sold 38 orders and cooked 11 racks of ribs. This week he cooked 55 pounds of brisket. He needs to sell about 23 orders to make back the money on what he put in to prepare and purchase all the food, then the rest goes into the bar.

“People like eating what I cook, and I am always trying to make money for the bar,” he said when asked about why he does it.

The money doesn’t just come from the food, the meal also brings in good business for the bar from people coming in to buy drinks and to socialize.

Especially when winter comes, people start getting outside less and so this gives them something to look forward to throughout the week.

As many of the good restaurants in the area cater toward tourists or can be expensive, because many locals in the community don’t make a whole lot, the event also helps locals afford to eat.

Customers explained that it was a good way for them to get out and have good food for not a lot of money. They also said that the food was always delicious.
