LPOSD quartet named students of the month

Sandpoint Elks Lodge No. 1376 has announced students of the month for September for the Lake Pend Oreille School District.

To be selected as an Elks student of the month, students must meet guidelines for character, citizenship, service, scholarship and leadership.

The Elks actively seek to reward youth through many different programs including scholarship awards, Hoop Shoot tournaments, dictionary donations to third graders, drug awareness programs and many other activities and programs.

Sandpoint Elks Lodge award thousands of dollars in scholarships and local students also received an additional money in state and national Elk scholarships. The Elks are the third lagest awarder of scholarships in the county and several students have received large scholarships from the state and national level of Elks.

Those honored were Jenny Slaveck, Nate Couch, Sara Hathaway and Elaina Kiebert.

- Jenny Slaveck, Sandpoint High School

The daughter of Mary Slaveck and the late Andrew Slaveck, Jenny Slavek was named an Elks Student of the Month for Sandpoint High School for September.

Slavek has been an honors student during all four years of high school, taking the most challenging classes possible in order to prepare herself for the future.

She has played the flute since the since the sixth grade, and made honors Symphonic band my sophomore year of high school. She plays on the SHS volleyball, basketball and tennis teams, as well as traveling to Spokane and Coeur d’Alene to play club volleyball for nine months out of the year. In addition, she has had the opportunity to captain the volleyball team her senior year, as well as captaining the tennis team my junior and senior year.

Slavek is an active member of the National Honor Society all four years of high school, which had allowed her the chance to be involved in multiple different volunteer groups. She said one of the most rewarding and life-changing volunteer opportunities that she had was the Youth Hospice Camp.

She is ranked 16th in her grade with a cumulative GPA of 4.1 and a 4.3 GPA for her junior year.

• Nathan Couch, Sandpoint High School

The son of Loren and Sara Couch, Nate is a senior at Sand-point High School and was was named an Elks Student of the Month for Septem-ber.

He has a GPA of 4.43 and is currently ranked first in his class.

Nate has participated in soccer, band, jazz band, and Academic Decathlon all four years of high school. Last spring, he was honored to represent his school and state when the SHS Acadeca team competed at Nationals in Bloomington, Minn.

In addition to being a hard worker in school, Nate has worked as a busser at Trinity for the past three years.

In his free time, Nate enjoys skiing, traveling to new places, Pad Thai, and Terraria.

- Sara Hathaway, Clark Fork High School

The daughter of Curtis and Molly Hathaway, Sara Hathaway has been named Elks Student of the Month for September at Clark Fork Jr./Sr High School. She grew up in Vancouver, Wash., and moved here her freshman year without her parents. She lived with a family friend and her grandfather until April 2017, when her parents joined her for the move.

Hatha-way has maintained a GPA of 3.97 throughout her high school career, and is currently enrolled as a dual-credit student at North Idaho College. Hathaway finished all but two required high school credits in just three years, and now holds a full schedule at the NIC satellite campus in Sandpoint. Last year, Hathaway received the honor as a regional top scholar as well.

Hathaway also participates in her school sports. Her freshman, sophomore, and junior year she played on her school’s football, basketball, and track team. She has been on her varsity basketball team since she was a freshman, and has played any position for her team as needed. In track, Hathaway has gone to state every year. Her events are the 100m hurdles, the 300m hurdles, and high jump. She finished in the top 5 for the hurdles her Freshman and Sophomore year. Unfortunately, Hathaway sustained a leg injury her junior year and could not finish out state as she wanted. Hathaway had also been invited to Australia to compete in a national track and field competition, being one of the competitors for the USA team; she finished 10th in the high jump, 6th in the 100m hurdles, and 4th in the 300m hurdles while down there. Currently, Hathaway is a part of her school’s volleyball team. Later this year she will continue to be apart of her basketball and track team as well.

Hathaway hopes to attend either the University of Idaho or Washington State University in the fall of 2020, as she works toward a doctorate degree in Veterinary Science. In her spare time she loves to hangout with family and friends, play some disc golf, snowboard, play with her dog Lucy, and overall, just relax.

- Elaina Kiebert, Clark Fork High School

Elaina Ruth Vlamingh Kiebert has lived in Hope for all 17 years of her life. She attended Hope Elemen-tary School from kindergarten to sixth grade and Clark Fork High School from seventh to twelfth. Her dad and three older sisters all graduated from Clark Fork as well, but she will be the last one in her family for a while.

She has been playing varsity sports all four years of high school and excelled in all three athletic seasons. She has participated in volleyball and basketball for all four years, did track the first two, and joined the tennis team for the last two.

Kiebert has also been taking dual credit classes since her sophomore year. After graduation, she plans on attending the University of Idaho and joining the College of Natural Resources. She would like to complete a bachelor’s degree within three years, then, for the fourth year, get her fire ecology and management certificate. She would love to become a park naturalist or get to work in a national park while teaching others about the outdoors.
