Stimson man injured

A freak backfire in the boiler room at Stimson Lumber Company sent one employee to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with injuries Sunday. As of Tuesday afternoon, reports are that Harry Marti is in satisfactory condition with burns on his face and one hand.

Times and Mitchell’s winners

Mitchell’s IGA and the Priest River Times have won two of the first “distinguished awards” ever given by Idaho Special Olympics. The Times won the media award for weekly newspapers. Mitchell’s IGA was a business winner.

Grad named presidential guard

Marine Pvt. First Class Brent R. Cooper, a 1989 graduate of Priest River High School, was recently assigned to the presidential honor guard in Washington. D. C.

Call for fire district

About a dozen homeowners and renters in the rural Priest River area met Oct. 3 at Larry Dale’s home to consider formation of a fire protection district. The meeting ended with the beginnings of a drive to find 80 area residents who would join the (West Pend Oreille) association by contributing $50 each for the first year’s protection.

A color photo on the inside back page shows an unidentified young man and young woman in a log rolling contest. According to the caption, the photo was taken at Priest River during the Loggers Celebration.

Church bell rings

A bell tower has been erected for St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church by members of the Priest River Knights of Columbus Council No. 4777, and the bell from the old church has been installed in it. Art Naccarato and August, Med and Henry Naccarato laid the foundation, with Jack Zimmer doing the electric welding. The bell will ring every Sunday five minutes before the 8 and 10 a.m. Masses.

Injured Sparts lose to IHM

The Priest River Spartans, with three senior backs out of action with broken wrists, lost their second football game of the season to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Friday night by a score of 12-0.

70 Years Ago — 1949

An article, “Weather is la carte,” explaining the dry ice experimentations of Vincent Schaefer, General Electric scientist, is published in the October issue of Popular Mechanics. Mr. Schaefer spent last summer at the Priest River Experiment Station working on his experiments. The U. S. Forest Service cooperated through H. T. Gisborne, chief of the division of fire research.

New building going up

Load after load of lumber, windows and frames, etc. are going by daily for the new CCC building being built across from the Coolin schoolhouse. The school board decided that the construction of a music hall and lunch hall have been needed for a long time, and now that there are many more students enrolled, the building has become an absolute necessity.

Pays willingly for good cause

“Shot-gun Charley,” noted character in these parts, was hailed into Judge Brown’s court Monday morning on a charge of being drunk. When he asked where all the money went that was collected on fines and being informed it went into the school fund, he paid his fine with the remark that he didn’t mind kicking in for a “good cause like that.”

100 Years ago — 1919

“Dinkey” being restored

Official word has been received from the Great Northern depot here that the “dinkey” (small, slow train) will be restored to service here Monday, Oct 5.

Trains 3 and 4 will be taken off the flag stop on No. 1. That was the understanding at the time the company agreed to stop the fast train after the removal of the dinkey.
