COEUR d’ALENE — Add some class to that trash this weekend at Kootenai Environmental Alliance's 11th annual Junk2Funk Trashion Show.
This year's theme is "Evolution Revolution," which reflects the fresh perspectives that will be coming from a mostly new committee putting on the upcycled attire event, as well as the new artistic minds behind the fashions.
"We have some new artists this year, some that haven't ever participated before, so that's exciting," said Alliance Administrative Director Jamie Lynn Morgan, one of the Junk2Funk organizers. "It's an evolution of the organization. In three years [the Alliance] will be 50 years old, so that's a milestone."
About 20 models will be walking the runway wearing clothing styled from 80% garbage and recyclables, "found items, paper bags, garbage bags, whatever they can think of," Morgan said.
"They get super creative. Some of the outfits are amazing," she said. "We can show that everything that’s out there at some point can be repurposed into something else. We don't have to have all this garbage that we have."
The event is a high-energy evening that introduces people to innovative recycled fashions as well as to what the Alliance does for North Idaho. As a watchdog, advocate and protector of forests, land, water and wildlife, the nonprofit continually engages the community through educational opportunities and helping people of all ages learn how they can make a positive difference.
"We're doing a whole lot of education with the kids with the Lake Coeur d'Alene Waterkeeper program and things like that," Morgan said. "We're going to take a stand on environmental issues."
The Junk2Funk Trashion Show will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Coeur d'Alene Eagles ballroom at 209 Sherman Ave. Doors open at 5 p.m.
Tickets are $40 and are available at www.kealliance.org or by visiting the Art Spirit Gallery, 415 Sherman Ave.
A Kids Eco-Fashion Show will take place at the Eagles at 1 p.m. that day. Admission: $5 at the door.
