Ugly, but still enough for Vikings

COEUR d’ALENE — It wasn’t the prettiest of games at times, but when it comes to the 5A Inland League standings, you take the wins where you can get them.
For the Coeur d’Alene Vikings, this one was at home on Friday night.
Junior quarterback Jack Prka completed 31 of 40 passes for 340 yards and two touchdowns, both to Colbey Nosworthy, as the Vikings beat the Lewiston Bengals 28-12 in the 5A IEL opener for both at Viking Field.
Coeur d’Alene (5-2) led 21-0 after the first quarter and 28-0 with 8:46 remaining in the half, then didn’t score again the remainder of the game.
“We played half a game,” Coeur d’Alene coach Shawn Amos said. “We looked terrible in the second half. We’ve still got stuff to work on.”
Prka hit Noswothy on touchdown passes of 8 and 3 yards as the Vikings took advantage of good field position early in the first quarter.
“We were rolling early on,” Prka said. “Colbey, and our entire offensive line, they were just dominating the other guys across the field.”
Coeur d’Alene was flagged for 12 penalties for 118 yards, with the bulk coming in the second half. Lewiston was penalized 8 times for 87 yards.
Coeur d’Alene has won 10 of the last 12 matchups with Lewiston dating back to 2008.
“A league win is a league win, and we’ll take it,” Amos said. “But we’ve got a lot to work on, which is a good thing because we will in practice next week. I thought we let ourselves get rattled a little bit by the officiating, and we can’t let that happen.”
Coeur d’Alene limited Lewiston to 45 yards rushing in the game and two first downs in the first half.
Gunner Giulio led Coeur d’Alene with 116 yards receiving.
“The first half was great football and what we want to see,” Amos said. “It’s just up to us to string together four quarters. If we keep playing like we did tonight, it’s going to bite us in the butt and we’re going to be sorry we didn’t play all four quarters. All of us, coaches and players, need to go back and re-evaluate what we’re doing.”
Coeur d’Alene travels to Lake City next Friday.
Lewiston cut the deficit to 28-12 with 4:45 remaining as Damon Shaw caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Kash Lang.
Lewiston (3-3) hosts Post Falls next Friday.
