Oct. 13, 1969 — KOOTENAI NEWS

Kootenai Better Community Club met at the home of Mrs. Louise Crandell with Mrs. Eleanor Carter as co-hostess. Election of new officers was held. Mrs. Frankie Roberson is president; Mrs. Darlene Fately, vice president; Mrs. Genevieve Thurlow, secretary; and Mrs. Dorothy Norlen, treasurer. The November meeting will be at Mrs. Dan Cornella’s home, with Mrs. Dorothy Baldwin as co-hostess.

MERWIN TO LEAD CHAMBER

New officers for Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce were elected last week. Terry Merwin, operator of Merwin’s Hardware, was moved up to president after serving as vice president. Serving with him for the year ahead are Jarold Andersen, Kaniksu National Forest supervisor, vice president; Bill Dowling, Idaho First National Bank, treasurer; and Barbara Remmers, secretary.

EARNS TRIP TO SAFETY CONFERENCE

Lucille Kalb, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward W. Kalb of Sagle has won an expense-paid trip to the Governor’s State-wide Safety Conference in Boise next week. A member of the Hoodoo Hustlers 4-H Club and a sophomore at Sandpoint Senior High, Miss Kalb is one of four district winners state-wide in the 4-H farm safety program. In Boise, Miss Kalb will visit the statehouse and hopes to meet Gov. Samuelson.

Oct. 13, 1919 — CITY BREVITIES

At the Central hospital last week, operations were performed on the following: J.E. Montell, Eastport; Mrs. William J. Moss and Mrs. J.P. Matthienson, of Sandpoint. All are doing nicely.

Bonner county taxes are the third lowest in the state, according to a statement made by the county auditor of Power county who has listed the counties. Ada’s taxes are the lowest; Latah is next and Bonner is third lowest at 18.35 mills.

BRIDGE, FAIR DRAW BIG CROWD

Clarksfork united two events Saturday with the holding of a community fair and the formal opening of its $100,000 steel bridge across the Clarksfork river. An ideal day and a big crowd, many of whom went by train and automobile from Sandpoint, marked the happy occasion.

WILL OPEN CIGAR STORE

Jack B. Gardner, former partner in the restaurant firm of Gardner and Barry which was dissolved about two years ago, has been directing the preparation of the interior of the building at 113 First avenue (Ed. note: RE/MAX in 2019) to accommodate a cigar store and soft drink parlor which will open in a day or two. The building was formerly occupied by the Warren & Richards grocery. Gardner will also run a rooming house on the second floor of the structure.
