SANDPOINT — No injuries were reported after a Bonner County sheriff’s deputy sideswiped another motorist on the U.S. Highway 95 Long Bridge while responding to a call on Friday night.

Idaho State Police said the unidentified deputy was headed southbound when his Chevrolet Tahoe patrol sport utility vehicle sideswiped an oncoming Suzuki Grand Vitara containing two adults and three minor children. After striking the northbound compact SUV, the deputy’s SUV crashed into a concrete barrier and came to rest sideways in the roadway, blocking both north and southbound lanes of travel, according to state police.

State police said the deputy was not wearing a seatbelt. All of the occupants of the Suzuki were wearing seatbelts or safety restraints.

The crash occurred at the north end of the bridge shortly before 10 p.m. The highway was blocked for approximately one and a half hours, according to ISP.

State police made no mention of injuries as a result of the collisions. The department said the matter remains under investigation.

Members of the public have taken to social media asking why ISP put a lampshade over the deputy’s name, but named others involved in the incident.

The deputy involved appeared to be heading to a report of a fight on Old House Road near Athol, according to the Bonner Dispatch log.
