Closed for good.

After another round of snow fell last week, Glacier National Park announced last week that the alpine section of the Going-to-the-Sun Road would not reopen this year.

The alpine reaches have been largely closed since a snowstorm in late September closed the road at higher elevations.

Another snow on Oct. 8 put a fresh layer on top of that.

The park’s road crew has successfully reopened Many Glacier Road, the Camas Road, and the portion of the Going-to-the-Sun Road between the foot of St. Mary Lake and Rising Sun. The Two Medicine Road remains closed due to ice and snow as of presstime.

Crews still have to take down more than 400 removable log rails along the highway before the snow gets too deep.

After a lull mid-week, the weather is expected to be bad again by week’s end, with more snow and rain in the forecast starting Thursday.
