RATHDRUM — A survey is under way to figure out what the future should hold for the Lakeland Joint School District.

Three community forums — tonight, Oct. 29 and Oct. 30 — are also being held for those who would like to contribute their thoughts or ask questions in person.

The survey and forums come two months after voters in the school district overwhelmingly turned down a $70.9 million bond that would have paid for a new comprehensive high school, moved Lakeland Junior High School to the current Lakeland High School, and expanded Timberlake Junior High School.

The data collection will be focused on what community members want to see happen in the district and how to address overcrowding in the elementary schools.

"We had the community Long Range Facility Planning Committee. They ran the bond and obviously the top priorities in our district weren't in alignment with what they thought was important," Superintendent Becky Meyer said Tuesday. "This is Plan B, which is to try to get as much community input as possible."

The survey, found at www.surveymonkey.com/r/NCQ8GH6, takes an average of six minutes to complete and will be open through the end of the month. Results will be directed to the Long Range Facility Planning Committee, released to the school district and presented to the school board. The results may call for another measure to be voted upon, but that wouldn't happen until the next election cycle.

"They're the taxpayers. They're the customers," Meyer said. "Our vision needs to align with the community vision. This is a great way to get a deeper level of input."

The community forums will be held at 5:30 this evening at Lakeland Junior High School, 15601 Highway 41 in Rathdrum; at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 29 at Spirit Lake Elementary, 32605 N. Fifth St., Spirit Lake; and at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Athol Community Center, 30355 Third St., Athol.
