Kispert, Elleby named to
Julius Erving Award Watch List
Gonzaga junior Corey Kispert and Washington State sophomore CJ Elleby were named Wednesday among 20 candidates for the 2020 Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award.
Kispert appeared in all 37 games last season, starting in every contest except Senior Night. He averaged eight points per game in 26.1 minutes per game. He led all starters with an .875 free throw percentage. The Edmonds, Wash., native, was second on the team with 61 made three-pointers. Following the season, he was tabbed Academic All-West Coast Conference for his efforts in the classroom.
Last season, Kispert’s former teammate Rui Hachimura was named the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award winner. Other previous winners include Mikal Bridges, Villanova (2018), Josh Hart, Villanova (2017), Denzel Valentine, Michigan State (2016) and Stanley Johnson, Arizona (2015).
Elleby is one of four Pac-12 players named to the list, as he’s joined by Arizona’s Josh Green, Oregon State’s Tres Tinkle, and Washington’s Jaden McDaniels.
The second-year Coug is coming off one of the most successful freshman campaigns in program history as the Seattle native finished last season averaging 14.7 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. He set the program’s freshman scoring record with 471 points in 32 contests, breaking Steve Puidokas’ 45-year-old freshman scoring record. In addition to his scoring, Elleby finished second all-time among Cougar freshman in rebounds (227), scoring average (14.7 ppg), and field goals (168), while finishing top-10 in eight other season categories. For his play, Elleby was named to the Preseason All-Pac-12 First Team in the inaugural season of the award.

Idaho’s Marxen earns preseason
all-conference in women’s basketball
Idaho sophomore guard Gina Marxen was named to the 2019-20 Big Sky preseason women’s basketball all-conference team, as announced by the league office on Wednesday.
Last year’s Freshman of the Year, Marxen appeared in all 34 contests, starting 31, and finished fourth on the team at 8.6 points per game.
Marxen’s breakout performance came early on, when she dropped 22 points at No. 7 Stanford. She finished that night 5-of-6 from beyond the arc, and added three rebounds and four assists.
Marxen scored in double digits in 10 of 20 conference games. In three games at the WNIT, Marxen averaged 10 points and six assists per contests in nearly 37 minutes per game.
Marxen and the Vandals get their season started with an exhibition on Friday, Nov. 1, against Lewis-Clark State. The regular season gets underway on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at Oklahoma State.
Senior forward Mason Peatling and junior guard Jacob Davison of Eastern Washington, who each missed 12 games last year due to injury, were named to the preseason all-Big Sky men’s basketball team.
Peatling earned second team All-Big Sky honors for the Eagles last year, with Davison earning third-team accolades as a sophomore despite missing the last 10 games with an ankle injury. Peatling averaged 15.3 points and 7.2 rebounds a year ago, while Davison averaged 15.2 per outing.
Peatling was also selected to the Big Sky All-Tournament team a year ago after averaging 20.3 points and 9.3 rebounds in three tourney games while sinking 62.9 percent of his shots from the field, helping Eastern reach the conference title game for a second straight season.
Until his injury, Davison had averaged 18.5 points in league play, including 23.8 points in his last nine outings.
