WALLACE – A Lifeflight helicopter was utilized Wednesday morning following a vehicle crash south of Wallace.

At approximately 9:55 a.m. on Oct. 16, emergency crews from Shoshone County Fire District No. 1 and the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to trail 16A near the area of Placer Creek Road (approximately four miles up Placer Creek) for a report of an injury resulting from an ATV accident.

While SCFD No.1 personnel were enroute to the scene, they were informed that there were two patients involved. As a result, a second ambulance was dispatched from SCFD No. 2.

Upon arrival, one patient was located on the roadway itself, while the other was found approximately 20 to 30 feet over the embankment.

The one found over the embankment, identified as Steven Looney, 34, of Post Falls was in critical condition and needed immediate medical attention. Personnel from all three agencies assisted in rescuing Looney from over the embankment by utilizing ropes and a stokes basket.

Looney was then loaded onto an ambulance and rushed to Sather Field in Silverton, where a Lifeflight helicopter was waiting to take him to Kootenai Health in Coeur d’Alene for treatment.

The other patient, identified as Steven Dolan, 34, of Post Falls, had only minor injuries and refused medical transport.

SCSO reports that both males were riding the ATV together when the driver, Looney, lost control of the ATV as they descended down the trail that they were on. Neither of the riders were wearing helmets at the time of the incident.

SCFD No. 1 Lt. Cyle Hanan would like to thank all agencies who assisted in the rescue.

“It’s amazing to see, during a time of need, how well all agencies can work in collaboration to achieve the task at hand.”
