Royal City Food Bank receives donation

ROYAL CITY — The Bayer Fund announced last week that it has given the Royal City Food Bank a $2,500 donation in a press release on Oct. 10.
“One never knows when a medical emergency, a layoff, or a job change will necessitate the need for food assistance,” said Mary McKinney, Royal City Food Bank’s director, in the press release. “That’s why we’re here.”
The Bayer Fund partners with local farmers through the American’s Farmers Grow Communities program. They have given over 8,000 nonprofits across the United State over $33 million in 2010.
“The program offers farmers the chance to direct a $2,500 donation to a nonprofit of their choice,” stated the press release.
The donation was directed to the food bank by Royal City farmer Patrick Lee.
“A better life is Bayer’s goal. Farmers are invested in their communities, they root for their neighbors, and they know when and where there is a need,” said Al Mitchell, Vice President of Corporate Engagement for Bayer, in the press release. “Farmers are one of America’s best resources, which is why Grow Communities partners with them to direct donations to the organizations they are passionate about and that make a positive impact and a better life in communities.”
As with other food banks, the Royal City Food Bank appreciates the donations they receive. They also receive donations from Second Harvest and Northwest Harvest.
The Royal City Food Bank is open Tuesday from 12:30 to 3 p.m. They are located at 229 Balsam St.

Othello looking for donations for annual Christmas baskets
OTHELLO — About 45 years ago, four volunteer firefighters decided to make Christmas food and gift baskets and give them to seven families who needed some extra help. The next year, they gave baskets to more families. In the years since, the Othello Community Christmas Baskets has become a city-wide event with various groups raising money, food, warm clothes and toys for Othello families in need.
