Andreessen honored for saving child's life

For rescuing a choking boy while off duty in a Polson restaurant last spring, volunteer firefighter Ryan Andreessen earned the Montana State Fire Chiefs Association’s Citizen Life Saving award.
Libby Fire Chief Tom Wood nominated the 18-year veteran firefighter for the annual honor. Andreessen was recognized for his meritorious conduct during an Oct. 11. awards ceremony.
The off-duty volunteer firefighter leapt into action March 23 while he, his wife and three daughters, were grabbing a meal during a basketball tournament in Polson. Across the room, a mother jumped up in a panic, imploring someone to help her son.
Employing the Heimlich maneuver, Andreessen cleared the boy’s airway, saving his life.
Andreessen has not said much publically about the rescue, but the Libby Volunteer Fire Department recognized him for his off-duty heroics during a small ceremony at the firehouse earlier in the year.
