POST FALLS — Reports of an attempted abduction near Ponderosa Elementary School in Post Falls on Thursday were widely circulated on social media, but a police investigation has not determined if it actually occurred.
A female student reported that while she was walking home from school on Thursday, a blue truck pulled into the bike lane about 20 feet in front of her.
The driver, described as a gray-haired man in his 50s or 60s, reportedly gestured at the student but did not exit the vehicle or otherwise communicate with her.
The student became frightened and fled the scene. She contacted her mother, who told her to return to Ponderosa and then called police.
Police learned on Friday that the student was accompanied by another student for part of her walk. The other student told police she saw the vehicle, but described it as a four-door vehicle with a stripe on the side.
Capt. Greg McLean of the Post Falls Police Department said the driver’s intentions are unknown. There was no contact between the driver and the student. However, he said Post Falls Police have increased their presence in school areas.
“We always ask the public to be vigilant,” McLean said. “If they see anything out of the ordinary, be sure to give us a call.”
Post Falls Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Programs Dena Naccarato said an email was sent to parents after the incident, encouraging them to speak with their children about what to do if they’re approached by a stranger.
“We do everything we can to communicate with our parents and our community,” she said. “If there’s a concern or they have questions, give us a call.”
